People often tell me, when they find out I am an art historian, that they do not know much about art--as far as I am concerned, everyone knows about art--making sense of the meanings, intended or not in works of art is something anyone can do--it just takes practice.
To me, art is in many ways the subconscious of humanity, and if you understand the visual culture of any given period, you understand that culture better-it is the best form of time travel there is!
