I hold a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Syria and a Master’s degree in Language Arts from California University of Pennsylvania (May 2021). I hold a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Syria and a Master’s degree in Language Arts from California University of Pennsylvania (May 2021). I served as an Arabic instructor at the Language Acquisition Resource Center (LARC) at San Diego State University for more than 4 years, where I designed and taught a wide range of courses, including Elementary Arabic (ILR 1 & 2), Intermediate Arabic (I & II), Advanced Arabic (ILR 2+ & 3), Conversational Arabic (in-person and online), Distinguished Arabic for highly proficient learners, as well as courses in Arabic Culture and Civilization.

In addition to my university teaching, I provide private instruction for non-native, heritage, and native speakers at all proficiency levels—Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, Distinguished, and Superior.

My responsibilities include developing comprehensive curricula in both Modern Standard Arabic and the Levantine dialect. I research, select, and integrate authentic audio, video, and reading materials into culturally and linguistically rich units that foster advanced proficiency. These units incorporate idioms, proverbs, colloquialisms, regional expressions, and slang, equipping students with the skills to navigate real-world Arabic in academic, cultural, and professional contexts.

As a native Arabic speaker, I have a passion for teaching the Arabic language as a means to bridge cultural understanding and has successfully taught Arabic to non-native speakers for over 8 years.I have experience in teaching both Modern Standard Arabic and Classical Arabic in addition to Arabic literature, media as well as the Levantine and Egyptian colloquial dialects. And I also assisted in the development of the intermediate and advanced Modern Standard Arabic curriculum at the Language acquisition center at San Diego State University.

Talented and Engaging Teacher

Hawazen is a fantastic teacher who is patient and meets you where you are. She has such deep knowledge not just of MSA Arabic, but seemingly all dialects. Seems like she has lived everywhere. I really wanted to learn Egyptian Arabic, and to not get hung up with other dialects and Hawazen was quick to understand this and also leverage pop culture/ music to augment the work on egyptian grammar, writing and pronunciation. We alsp always have interesting discussions on topics also that expand the range of my vocabulary on useful topics. Really enjoy working with her!

pleasant and constructive tutor

Hawazen customized mylearning program to my abilities and interests. In particular she focused on conversational skills in the Egyptian dialect to help me communicate with locals on my planned travels to Morocco, Egypt and Jordan. (She also tutors the Levantine dialect and MSA.) She recorded her voice speaking lists of words and phrases that we thought would be important to advance my communication skills. She then sent them to me by WhatsApp so that I could listen and practice on my own time. I highly recommend her tutoring services.

Hawazen is the BEST arabic tutor I have ever had

Hawazen is the best tutor I have ever had for arabic. During my first lesson, after discussing my goals for colloquial arabic, she managed to accurately gauge my exact speaking level perfectly. She spoke to me at a level at which I would be able to understand her while simultaneously incorporating new words that would keep developing my vocabulary. Her teaching methodology is very creative and fun. She incorporated songs and comedy tv shows while teaching me, both of which were not only relevant to my goals, but were genuinely very enjoyable to go through. I highly recommend Hawazen to anyone looking to learn the arabic language.

Brilliant Teacher

Hawazen not only has a native knowledge of the Arabic language having lived most of her life in Syria. She also has a background in linguistics which gives her the ability to breakdown and convey her teaching in easily manageable lessons. I have had many Arabic teachers and never progressed so quickly. I highly recommend working with her no matter what level you are, you will have great results.
