Tutoring largely started out as a hobby for me. I enjoyed helping my fellow classmates learn material and be successful while at the same time learning from them. That cooperative nature of tutoring, working together to achieve student-inspired goals, is what turned it into a passion.

I graduated from the University of Puget Sound in Washington with a Bachelor's of Science in Mathematics and Economics. As a math department tutor, I was given the opportunity to help college students of all levels, from basic college math to upper division courses and statistics. I have also done private tutoring for the last ten years with all ages, ranging from elementary students to adults. I am comfortable tutoring any level of math, including test prep, as well as economics.

My teaching philosophy is simple: you get out what you put in. Lessons will be structured based on the idea of student-driven learning. This means that students will be encouraged to develop clear goals, and we will work to achieve those goals based on a learning framework that will involve hands-on and real world examples. Students will be challenged, but not overwhelmed. Tutoring is supposed to help students achieve success with the work they already have, not create more work for them unnecessarily.

I strive to be flexible when it comes to scheduling sessions. I have a 24-hour in advance cancellation policy, but I offer make-up sessions and rescheduling. I am willing to travel to the student or to an agreed upon neutral location.

Please feel free to contact me for further information, to schedule sessions, or to see if I am the right fit for you. I look forward to working with you to achieve your goals.

Common Core

Common Core

In California, common core state testing is done with the SBAC (also called the CAASPP). In the spring and summer of 2015, I served as a test grader for the CAASPP and was eventually promoted to the position of scoring leader. As a grader, I was required to be very familiar with the Common Core standards and the test structure. As a scoring leader, I actively coached and supported test graders, leading to an intimate knowledge of Common Core testing and how to explain it to others.
Econometrics

Econometrics

I graduated from the University of Puget Sound with a Bachelor's of Science double major in Mathematics and Economics. At Puget Sound, I was a math department tutor specializing in all college math courses, including statistics and econometrics. I also spent a year in an Economics Ph.D. program at the University of Oregon where I was an instructor for Friday classes for both Micro and Macroeconomics. I have completed statistics research as part of an REU program at Ohio Wesleyan University.
Macroeconomics

Macroeconomics

I graduated from college with a double major in Economics and Mathematics. As part of my college graduation requirements, I completed an Economics thesis. After college, I spent a year in an Economics graduate program at the University of Oregon where I tutored college Economics students and taught Friday sections of introductory Economics.
Microeconomics

Microeconomics

After college, I spent a year in an Economics graduate program at the University of Oregon where I tutored college Economics students and taught Friday sections of introductory Economics.
Statistics

Statistics

As a tutor and a holder of an economics and mathematics bachelor's degree, statistics has been a major focus of my studies and practice. I have conducted research in statistics as part of a National Science Foundation REU grant as well as completed a statistics driven economics thesis. In my tutoring, I have helped both high school and college students succeed in Statistics of all levels, from introductory courses to advanced courses such as linear statistical models, math statistics, and probability theory.

Fantastic tutor!

Matthew is reviewing college algebra with my daughter in preparation for her freshman year. He explains concepts in a way that is engaging and super clear, and he seems to genuinely enjoy it (that makes a difference!). I highly recommend Matthew as a math tutor.

Great Tutor and dedicated teacher

Matthew has been an awesome find this summer. He's been extremely beneficial in explaining statistical concepts in an easy to understand manner. I wish I had started at the beginning of the semester.

Math WIZARD!

Mathew is the best math teacher ever! I'm returning to college at 45 years old and was feeling lost. Luckily I found Mathew on Wyzant and I've never felt more confident! My grades have improved with each exam and I continue to show growth, my college instructor has even noticed the turnaround and I thank Mathew for the improvement. He is very patient, wonderful communication skills, he explains and shows you step-by-step the road map of each problem without making you feel naive. Like Mathew says "You are learning a new language and it takes time". I would recommend Mathew to anyone. Math was my worst subject in school and now I currently have a B and couldn't be happier!

Gentle, knowledgeable, patient, very helpful

Matthew kept me alive through my MBA prep course. I did an English BA and can hardly find my way around Excel, but despite my math illiteracy he was able to break everything down for me in easy-to-digest methods. Always very patient with questions, consistently calm with a pleasant disposition. He's a pleasure to work with, and I would recommend him to anyone.

Knowledgable and patient tutor

Matthew was fantastic in helping me to better understand calculus topics in under an hour than the past ten weeks of my professors lectures. He explains in a clear and concise way, and made sure at every simple step I was following along. I will certainly be using him again for future calculus courses!

Extremely patient and helpful

I worked with Matthew for my intermediate econometrics course. He was extremely helpful in explaining concepts and never made me feel unintelligent for not knowing things. He has a positive attitude and explains things well. I am thankful I was able to work with him and highly recommend!
