Hi, I’m Sydney! I am passionate about teaching biology and chemistry topics to young scientists. I tailor my approach to each individual student to ensure that they are in a learning environment that is most productive for them.

I have spent almost my entire life learning in school classrooms and laboratories. I graduated Lafayette College with Honors in Chemistry and a B.S. in Biochemistry. I then proceeded to deepen my understanding of biochemistry and microbiology by obtaining my PhD in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School under the supervision of Dr. Amir Mitchell.

Throughout my education, I realized that while I love science, my greater passion is for teaching and mentoring the next generation of young scientists. I was a Teaching Assistant for General Chemistry for 2 years at Lafayette College, where I taught both scientific theory and laboratory techniques to first year college students. As a PhD student, I closely mentored multiple high school students as they pursued independent projects in Dr. Mitchell’s lab. While this educational opportunity was centered on teaching science through experimentation, I also created lesson plans and gradually taught highly complex microbiology topics to the high school students through one-on-one meetings.

As a tutor, I strive to both help students improve their academic performance and foster an appreciation for science. I will adapt my approach according to each student’s needs - creating custom lessons plans, presentations, and problem sets as best fits the student. It is always my goal to show students that science is for everyone and that every complex topic becomes approachable when we break it down into simpler parts.

Approved Subjects

Biology

Biology

I obtained my PhD in biomedical sciences from UMass Chan Medical School in March 2026. To obtain my degree I took graduate level classes in biology, immunology, microbiology, systems biology, and the cell cycle. I deepened my knowledge through experimentation and literature review as I performed the scientific inquiry necessary to complete my thesis work. During this time, I also mentored both graduate students and high school students on biological theory and experimentation.
Genetics

Genetics

I have become an expert in bacterial genetics through my PhD work, in which I routinely performed manipulations of bacterial DNA using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and DNA screening techniques. I also studied yeast genetics while obtaining my Bachelor's degree at Lafayette College in the lab of Dr. Justin Hines. In the classroom, I also performed well in my genetics coursework during both my undergraduate and graduate education.
