Explains math so it makes sense

I’m Josh, and I love math! I graduated cum laude from San Diego State University with a B.S. in Mathematics and a 3.61 GPA. After college, I became a financial services analyst where I use math in my job on a daily basis. I am often called upon to provide statistics to influence decisions and to do calculations as part of a cost benefit analysis.

I started tutoring math by helping my peers back when I was in high school. As an adult, I've tutored math for 30+ years at all levels, from elementary school to college level, but my specialties are Common Core, Algebra, and Precalculus. I feel like teaching is in my blood because my mother and two brothers were all high school teachers. If I hadn’t gone into finance, I probably would have become a math teacher.

My philosophy on tutoring is that I believe math should be fun. When a student is able to work out the answer to a tough problem, it gives them a sense of pride and accomplishment, and I try to help them get that reward. The beauty of mathematics is that even though a solution generally has only one answer, there are often multiple ways to arrive there. As a tutor, I try to use different methods to see which one works best with the individual student. What works well for one may not work for others, so I try to vary my approach to find the method that works for the individual. When I asked a recent student what she likes about the way I help her with math, she said "When you explain it, it just seems to make sense!"
