About Rodney

Bio

I have been teaching kids ranging from 7-18 about the basic fundamentals of basketball for at least 10 years now. I started officiating basketball at the age of 14 for CYO in Pleasanton. At 16 I was promoted to captain and at 18 I was promoted to supervisor. Since then I have worked as the head trainer and evaluator for the referee program teaching kids to better improve themselves as an official and as a person. We train approximately 50-80 kids a year and most of them are returning officials. Pleasanton is the only CYO section that uses children grade 9th and up to officiate all basketball games played in the city. I educate them on rules knowledge as well as go over video to breakdown plays and scenarios. In my previous years I have coached a few teams as an assistant and played during my time.

I’d like to use my experience and skills to teach others and help more players improve their basketball IQ. Understanding the rules is the biggest importance because they determine the way the game is played. Being an official has not only improved my knowledge and playing skills but it also improved my mental toughness.

I first started playing basketball at age seven. I played all throughout my childhood on travel teams as well as in high school. I started officiating in high school and was playing at the same time. I’ve been a high school official for eight years now and a college official for two years. Every year our certification must be renewed by taking a 100 question test online on rules, court positioning, and mechanics with a passing score of 80%.

In addition I’m also very skilled in fitness training. From cardio to strength training my experience and knowledge is above average. All workouts include a mixture of strength, cardio, and endurance required to keep up on the court.

Allow yourself to learn more of what you don’t know. The players I see mastering their craft are the ones who succeed in their goals. Don’t be afraid to challenge yourself mentally.
