I’m an experienced science/math teacher and tutor, U.C. Berkeley grad, as well as a former molecular biologist. Currently I’m working as a full time middle and high school science/math teacher for charter schools in the east bay. I’m also working as a private tutor to help students pass their CBEST/CSET exams, improve their SAT and ACT scores, and to improve their grades in chemistry, biology and math. My tutoring style is relaxed and informal, yet structured to and tailored to the learning style for each student. I will devise a program based on your child's or your own goals and learning style that offers a clear path toward higher achievement on tests, quizzes and exams.

I have a strong biology, math and chemistry background, both in an academic setting, (M.S. in molecular biology from Cal State Univ. Hayward, & a B.S. in Environmental Science from U.C. Berkeley ) research lab, (2 years experience) and in the biotech industry as a Business Development rep. in the biopharmaceutical industry (15 years) working with Ph.D. level medicinal chemists and biologist. I've taught science and math in the public school system for over seven years.

I'm well qualified to teach all of the major college entrance exams including the SAT, PSAT, and ACT. In recent practice exams, I scored 1520 on the full SAT, 800/800 in the Biology SAT II and 720/800 in the chemistry SAT II exam. I also teach my students the best strategies to maximize their scores on timed exams.

I know how to present math and science in a way that will keep my students interested and focused. I am very patient and friendly with my students and will accept all students regardless of ability level. I will do more than just help you solve the next problem. You will be taught a framework and a step by step approach to solving a variety of similar problems. Students will see a real increase in their understanding of the subject material through careful analysis and discussion of the questions and answers to their homework/test problems.

Approved Subjects

ACT Science

ACT Science

I have a broad scientific background and knowledge based on my B.S. from U.C. Berkeley in environmental science and my M.S. in molecular and cell biology. I've worked in the biotech industry with Ph.D. level chemists, biologists and pharmacologists for over fifteen years. On a recent SAT II Biology exam, I scored a perfect 800. I'm quite familiar with the sort of questions found on the ACT science exam, and have an organized plan for preparing my students.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I've had more than twelve years experience teaching/tutoring basic Algebra to both middle and High school students as well as adults. I've also taught a full Algebra I and II, Geometry, and Pre-Algebra courses at a one-on-one private high school for learning challenged students. Whenever possible, I use real world examples to keep the students engaged.
Biology

Biology

I've been a biology teacher & tutor in the east bay for over seven years. I spent over 15 years working with Ph.D. level biologists at biopharmaceutical companies as a business development manager. I recently scored a perfect 800 on a timed SAT II Biology practice exam. I am knowledgeable in both ecology and molecular/cell biology.
CBEST

CBEST

I have passed the CBEST exam, and have over seven years experience as a math/science teacher. I've worked six of those years as a substitute teacher, and am currently employed full time at a private school offering individualized classes in math and science.
Chemistry

Chemistry

I've taught/tutored both middle and high school chemistry for over seven years. I've also tutored college chemistry students. My chemistry background includes college level courses in general and organic chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology and pesticide chemistry. I've spent over thirteen years on the Business Development side selling chemistry services to Ph.D. level medicinal chemists at biotech and pharma companies worldwide.
Ecology

Ecology

I majored in Environmental Studies at UC Berkeley, with a specialty in Entomology and Pest Management. I have a strong understanding of Ecology as well
Genetics

Genetics

I have worked over seven years as a genetics/biology teacher and tutor at the middle and upper school levels which gives me the ability to present the material in a way students can understand. I've done some college level tutoring as well. I have an M.S. in molecular biology, which is the molecular basis of genetics. I've had college level courses in basic genetics, molecular biology and microbial genetics, which explained in detail the mechanism of inheritance and mutation. I also have extensive experience working in a molecular biology lab.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I've had considerable experience teaching pre-algebra to middle school students both one-on-one and in a class room setting. I will explain the concepts in a way your kid will understand.

Nice Guy

He was a nice guy. Printed out a bunch of stuff. Was a bit late for our session but was helpful. Helped my situation as best as he could. Is thorough and helps with the details.

Tutor responded:

I don't believe Chris' rating accurately reflected the effort and preparation I put into this initial session. He had sent me a long list of problems he wanted to review. I spent close to two hours going through the problems prior to his session and printing out important tables to guide him in answering the questions from a fairly difficult freshman college chemistry course. He was a lawyer without a strong science background trying to start a career in the biological sciences. We went through a number of problems and he appeared to be grasping the material. He told me later that he wasn't getting any of it and was just pretending to do so. Rather than giving me the opportunity to explain the solutions differently, he chose to terminate further sessions and give me a poor rating. On the positive side, the student liked me personally and felt I was thorough and detail oriented. I urge you to consider these facts along with my education and extensive teaching experience when making your decision as to whom to work with as your tutor.

Crispr

Barry, started the session with a high level overview of genetics. Then he went over the DIY Odin Kit Protocol. He finalized the session with a few tips for the experiment. He answered all of our questions quickly.

Super nice

My 13-year-old son found that Barry helped him a great deal with his geometry and sometimes other non-math subjects. He takes time to explain tough concepts. Super nice.

Ultra responsive

I was in a jam with a problem set and tight deadline. Barry helped me through and was a life (and grade) saver! He helped me with an environmental science problem set and obviously knows the subject matter well.

Exactly what I was hoping for

Very pleasant, professional, similar life experiences. Just like George Foreman once said “plan your work, then work your plan” and that’s what Barry and I are doing. Planning on beating this test to a pulp.
