Hello, My name is Ishmael. I have an AA-Music Industry Studies, majoring in vocals and performance. My singing methods include the "Bel Canto" classical style of training mixed with freelance experiences. Freedom of the voice allows the singer to discover their true and natural voice, giving the singer and the listener a moment of heartfelt expression, yet the voice rests on a basis on disciplined practice and clear thinking. My training includes use of some foreign languages, and some popular and musical theater music. I also have an AA-Social and Behavioral Sciences.

I have played drums since I was 8 years old. I play latin percussive instruments. I have learned theory through the voice and piano, and I play some guitar and piano. I have experience in the recording room, on stage set up, and with a mixing/sound board. I have been writing lyrics and composing music since 2009. I have composed for film.

I am a SAG-AFTRA(e) actor and have been training as an actor since 2014. I can help build your confidence and gain performance experience by matching your facial expressions and body language to the emotion of the music. My exercises will also help build articulation and enunciation, making you a better speaker in your everyday life.

Music is the universal language of our ultimate expression. That's why fun and excitement are a given with my lessons. Singing is a skill and can be learned by anyone who commits themselves. The more you commit, the more fun you'll have.

Composition (Music)

Composition (Music)

In today's world, composing and writing lyrics go hand-in-hand. First you must understand what a song is, what poetry is, and what music is. Then, you must find the inspiration and create a story using both emotion and structure. Once the flow of the story is moving, the musical theory training comes into play. Making a connection with the listener is the goal of composition, be it a short 5 second commercial tune or a progressive operatic ballad.
Drums

Drums

I have played drums for over 20 years. I have experience with playing various genres of music that require vast changes in the playability of each drum. I can play on full drum set that requires knowledge on handling and hitting with sticks and brushes. I have experience with different hand percussion instruments that are played on a skin. I also have experience with shakers. I can teach various time signatures and cadences. I also know stretches and exercises that can help limber the hands and wrists.
Football

Football

I played for five years. I played offensive line (including center) my first two years. I played middle and outside linebacker the next two years. The last year I played defensive tackle. I have studied films and have read playbooks. I know many training exercises (including weights and calisthenics) and techniques to better understand mentally and physically how to play. Teamwork ability and good character on and off the field are the main components to a winning team.
Guitar

Guitar

I can teach proper technique of how to hold and place the guitar, standing and sitting, including proper techniques of the fingers and the wrist for maximum playability relative to the student. I know various songs that can train each student on how to shape chords, strum, pick and pluck the strings. We will learn from tabs as well as sheet music. I can also teach various scales so the student will learn each note played in the frets.
Music Theory

Music Theory

I believe music is a universal language with its own vocabulary and it can be learned by everyone and anyone. To learn Music Theory, you always have to first understand that music has a vast amount of potential to be transformed into an emotional journey. In this understanding, there are roles in which certain notes in a key signature play. I can teach how to employ a variety of techniques to clarify underlying voice leading, harmonic structure, and formal procedures.
Piano

Piano

Piano is essential for learning to play and understand music and music theory. I teach positioning of the fingers and hands to properly play while balanced and relaxed, without tension. Visually and audibly speaking, the piano is the easiest instrument to learn to understand the progressions of melody and rhythm. As a songwriter, I teach them to read music while playing for maximum learning ability and to develop composition skills. As a performer, the piano will help define the correct tone of each note for other instruments the student may play (especially singing) and develop tonal dictation.

Voice (Music)

Voice (Music)

I'm have been professionally singing since 2010. My methods incorporate; the use of diaphragmatic breathing for optimal voice connection and forming the vocal foundation; exercises that train the voice and body using various techniques to connect with the resonators to strengthen and smooth out the cracks in the voice; learning how to apply your energy towards an audience for higher confidence and performance ability; learning the melodic lines of a song and breaking down each chord for optimal harmony; and reading, writing, and possible composing on staff paper. My classical training comes from the style of "Bel Canto", which includes some foreign language. For children; I have incorporated the exercises to relate to familiar sounds (animals, sirens, etc.) to help them remember what to listen for.

So far so good!

We have had two lessons - he’s working with my 13 year old on piano. My son is enjoying the lessons and feels like he’s learning! We will sign up for more lessons.

Patient, Kind, & Understanding

Good to have a teacher that is understanding, kind, & patient with me. As a 32 year old with ADHD & just the word "class" or "lesson" can be severely intimidating for me. He makes it chill, fun, & a safe space for me to make any mistakes because mistakes are how we learn. ♡ 10 out of 10 would recommend. ♡
