I'm a friendly and approachable Ivy-League graduate with a love for language, decades of writing experience, and a gift for teaching all levels in English vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension and writing. Understanding of common issues students face in test prep, I also offer solutions and accountability for students facing classroom and standardized (SAT, AP) exams, and specialize in substantive test prep for the current SAT Reading and Writing sections. My experience as a Yale alumni network interviewer and studies in the UCLA and UC Berkeley College Counseling certificate programs have given me additional insight into the most important aspects of student application essays and college admission interviews.

My aim is always to draw out the strengths of each of my students, to elevate their thinking, and, by helping them develop new skills, to increase their confidence in their abilities. My approach to counseling is similar in that I assist students in identifying what it is they value and most want in a college, and what they want more specifically from the colleges to which they apply. In helping students with application essays and interviews, I assist them in authentically and effectively conveying their interests, goals, and character in a manner that improves their chances of admission to the colleges of their choice.

I enjoy working students of all nationalities on improving their written and spoken English. More importantly, they have all viewed our sessions as successful and productive! I especially enjoy comparing and contrasting the characteristics of English with my students' respective native languages. This technique provides my students with an additional level of understanding as they gain competence and confidence in their desired areas of improvement.

My interest in French language and culture has been life-long: I studied French from the First Grade, through college, including in a semester at University of Paris through UC Berkeley. I have several French friends with whom I communicate in French, have used my language skills in my past career in business, and frequently am complemented on my accent, which, thanks to my early training and residency in Paris, is very authentic. In addition I participate in courses and events at the Alliance Francaise, and recently took a 3rd year French course at UC Davis that emphasized speaking, writing and grammar skills. It was a great "refresher," and I could not have enjoyed it more. I especially enjoyed watching the younger and less experienced students gain competence and confidence. It was also a great reminder that in this interconnected world, the ability to speak and understand any foreign language is a great asset.

I love handwriting and am happy to ensure it is a skill that continues to be passed on to all students. Since Elementary School, where I won the Best Handwriting Award, people have commented on my "perfect" handwriting. I acquired this skill almost entirely by practicing recommended techniques on the traditional specially-lined paper. Now. people occasionally ask me to handwrite notes for them. I also have studied handwriting analysis with a professional handwriting analysis expert and understand the variations that individual personalities tend to make when writing in what used to be called "cursive," as well as the special approach required for left-handed students. As you may have noticed, I have perfect reviews from my students. I'm a great tutor of all of the subjects in which I've qualified, and my students seem to really appreciate my approach to teaching and learning. I'm also especially talented at teaching subjects such as handwriting in a way that ensures a good foundation in each component of a particular skill. In handwriting, it is important to take this approach, as learning how to write each part of a letter before learning the entire letter is required for most letters in the alphabet.

Literature,

Literature

I'm a Yale graduate with a love of language and literature of all kinds. I grew up reading all I could at my various age-levels and at Yale I pursued courses in each of the most recent three centuries of English novels, the 20th century American novel, Shakespeare (comedies and tragedies), Modern American Poetry, French Literature, Russian Literature, and Literary Theory. When it comes to my middle-school and high school level students, I've seen what happens when the progress from a state of not "understanding the point of" English class to a first-time appreciation of great literary works; watching the "light bulb" go on, the improvements in their language skills and grades, as well as their increased confidence, is incredibly satisfying for me as their tutor. In addition, the many SAT and AP students I work with have thanked me for giving them the tools they needed to improve their SAT English scores, as well as their AP English performance in class and on the AP Exam. Because of my understanding of great literature, I'm able to help students of all levels learn how to approach literary works in a way that helps each student to identify what those works are attempting to communicate. For fiction, this requires students to not only comprehend what they are reading, but also to understand what the author wishes to express. The means by which authors express themselves in turn is often the topic of required essays and frequently the key to multiple choice and short-answer quizzes and exams. Consequently, I assist my students in improving their grades, scores, and appreciation of literature by aiding them to become more adept at identifying the means by which authors use language and form to express their observations, beliefs, and ideas, or perhaps render an exploration of a topic or concept through their written work. Being able to identify how literary devices and basic elements of fiction such as character, plot, and setting accomplish this is crucial to any student's success in an Eng

Bar Exam,

Bar Exam

I'm a licensed attorney (active member of CA Bar but not currently practicing) and have passed both the California and New York State bar exams, generally considered among the most difficult in the country. I'm a graduate of Yale University and Cardozo School of Law, and worked for 7 years at top Wall Street law firms and then as a Vice President of Legal Affairs for a major international media conglomerate. I'm a gifted tutor and am able to adapt my methods to each student's abilities and needs. Building confidence and reducing anxiety go a long way with the LSAT, which to a certain extent intimidates many students who have not had to think in the way required by the LSAT before and thus lack the skills necessary to successfully navigate the lengthy exam and logic games, in particular. I try to outline an exam prep strategy for each student, in order to give them a clear measure of their progress, enabling them to accumulate momentum and enthusiasm for "sticking out" and eventually conquering the study and exam process.

Excellent help and focused ideas

Elyse has been a reliable and knowledgeable tutor, helping to walk me through the college admissions process. Since college is a little new to me, Elyse helped guide me towards good-fit schools. She asked pointed questions about what I want from my education and then offered some focused ways to go about getting it. Very insightful.

Insightful and helpful

I am very glad I had the opportunity to work with Elyse, she was very thorough and efficient with her advice and I got a lot to work with even with 1.5 hours. I got a new perspective on the whole process, seeing more from the eyes of an admissions officer. I also enjoyed that she guided me in the right directions through asking questions and helping me dive deeper into each prompt. Overall it was very productive and she was encouraging as well as kind throughout the whole process.
