I am 3rd year undergrad student at UC Davis pursuing my bachelor's degree in Mathematics. As a tutor, I specialize in Algebra 1 & 2, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus.
I have previously worked at a private tutoring company in the East Bay, where I tutored grades 5-12 in mathematics, English, and SAT/ACT prep. I also previously worked as a Special Education Assistant at a public high school. Both of these previous positions granted me experience in working with students with disabilities, such as ADHD and dyslexia. Additionally, I was hired as a student math tutor while attending Diablo Valley College. There, I completed a course on math tutor training--further developing my tutoring skills--and I had the opportunity to tutor fellow college students. Overall, I have been working in education for over 3 years. I completed my Associate's degree in mathematics at DVC with a 4.0 GPA prior to transferring to UC Davis. I chose to study mathematics because I genuinely love helping people learn math, and continuing to teach math is my long-term goal.
In my tutoring, I strive to emphasize growth and to nurture my students' confidence in themselves. I meet my students where they are at, assess their current skills and areas for growth, and validate their emotions when the material is confusing (as it frequently is!). I believe my role as a tutor is to be a guide: to provide advice and to teach the student how to make connections on their own.
As someone who did not like math at first and had a non-traditional journey through higher education, I have a lot of empathy for students who struggle with math and school in general. Learning math does not need to be as tedious and stressful as it can often be! And as someone who is LGBTQ and neurodivergent, I strive to make my tutoring sessions a safe space for my students' individual selves, in whatever form that may be.
