Hello! My name is David. I just completed my B.A. in mathematics at UC Davis. I have extensive experience tutoring elementary through high school mathematics both privately and as an employee of Mathnasium. I also volunteered as a calculus tutor for undergraduate students at UC Davis. I am passionate about helping people learn math because math did not always come naturally to me. I used to struggle heavily when learning new math concepts. I had to read, re-read and practice them much longer than my peers before they became intuitive, so I empathize deeply with students who are intimidated by math. I have had some excellent teachers and professors who have been patient with me and built up my love for math, and I want to carry that torch. People I've tutored in the past will attest that I am extremely patient, and more than willing to go over topics as many times as necessary to build understanding. I will never rush someone that I'm tutoring, and I will check in with them frequently to ensure that they're up to speed.
Through my extensive math education I have become an expert at slowly breaking down hard problems into simple, manageable steps. This is how I learn, and it's how I teach students in my tutoring. I can say from personal experience that this method is the most effective for managing math anxiety. My goal is never to lecture who I'm tutoring, I want to work alongside them and learn their approach to problem-solving. Once I understand their approach, I will ask them questions to guide their intuitions towards the right answer. This approach to tutoring is more fun, and in my experience significantly more conducive to real learning.
I want to assist the students that I work with as much as I can, so I am highly receptive to feedback or new resources provided to me by students or parental guardians. Please feel free to reach out if you'd like to schedule a lesson!
