Hi there! My name is Melissa. I'm a versatile tutor specializing in Reading and Music. I am currently an itinerant music teacher teaching at four different schools across the Bay Area, as well as a Springboard Collaborative English Teacher in the summer. I am in my fifth year of teaching and I have taught a multitude of subjects, including middle school Earth and Space Science, middle school PLTW Automation and Robotics, K-12 Music, and English. Additionally, I am an instrumentalist. I have played the flute for 18 years and teach students how to play four different instruments (flute, clarinet, trumpet, and violin) on a daily basis.
I graduated from Florida International University with a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology. I have received training in multiple different learning frameworks such as AVID and Project Lead The Way. My teaching philosophy is based in humanism. I support the whole child through student choice and fostering a nurturing learning environment where questions and mistakes are welcome. Students in my classroom enjoy indirect instruction through inquiry-based learning in groups. I work to make learning a fun, stress-free environment where students can learn by exploration. As a tutor, I enjoy teaching concepts rather than memorization, allowing students to apply their knowledge across a range of scenarios.
If you think I may be a match for your learning needs, please feel free to reach out with a message! I am quick to respond and look forward to co-creating a positive learning environment with you!
