I was born and raised in Malaysia in a multilingual background. Throughout my childhood, with exposure to many different languages around me, I have mastered Chinese, English, Cantonese, and Malay language. I am fluent and proficient in all of the languages above. At the age of 18, I moved across the country to obtain my Bachelor's Degree at the University of California, Berkeley where I pursued my Mechanical Engineering degree. During my time in college, I became an Embedded tutor/Teaching assistant at my college where I would help struggling students to learn and absorb difficult concepts or materials through interactive and positive reinforced environment.
From experience, many students want us to give them a direct answer and show them the solution. However, most students do not learn well this way as they are not being engaged and challenge to think and solve the problem themselves. The teaching style that I have adopted is to ask the students a lot of questions and will slowly guide their thinking process towards the solution. While I do not give out the answers directly, I ask questions in a way that enables the students to apply their knowledge. If I sense that they lack the knowledge in certain aspect, I would do a recap and refresh their memory to guide them.
For two years, I taught at a university setting as well as a community college setting where I interacted with mostly college students. However, there are some occasions when I would tutor high school students who are trying to earn credits for their future education journey. I also tutor some middle-aged adults who decided to continue pursuing their degrees. I have experience in a classroom setting where I had to step up and teach the class when the professor was running late. I also have a lot of experience with one-on-one at the college tutoring center where I would sit down with students to guide them through their assignments.
