Hello~ My name is Josh and I am a lecturer for the California State University system with 15+ years of teaching experience. I have been privileged to have manifold opportunities to develop myself as an educator in one-on-one, small classroom, and lecture hall settings. From my undergraduate training at CSU Long Beach to my graduate education at the University of Southern California, I have spent countless hours working at tutoring centers, as a teaching assistant, and as a primary instructor for general, organic, and biological chemistry.

My approach to tutoring is to offer my students true dialogue, an exchange where you can communicate your concerns and questions so that I may reciprocate quality feedback. My guiding philosophy towards chemistry education leans towards simplification. Nature can get really complicated, but we will work towards mastering that complexity by breaking down topics and identifying critical patterns to make sense of it all! But most importantly, I recognize that all students have varying preferences when it comes to learning modalities; I have spent my career becoming sensitive to these differences so that I can help you achieve lasting comprehension of material. During tutoring sessions, I believe that I must be malleable so that I can meet students where they need to be met. Together, this is how we can reach your academic goals!

Most recently, I have taught lecture and laboratory courses in organic chemistry and work with a diverse array of undergraduate students. Each semester, I engage with anywhere from 200-400 students and have designed supplementary resources that I have used to target common mistakes that arise in chemistry. I draw on these items during my tutoring sessions and make them available to my students. The hope is that my experience can be distilled into digestible study tools for your benefit!

I graduated in 2014 from CSU Long Beach with a Bachelors of Science in Biochemistry, with departmental honors. Currently, I am a graduate student in biochemistry and serve as a teaching assistant for the biochemistry course for pre-nursing students. I have extensive experience tutoring biochemistry for a wide range of majors including pre-nursing, biochemistry, and students on the pre-medical track.

Organic Chemistry

Organic Chemistry

Organic chemistry has been my most beloved subject since the beginning of my chemistry career. As a biochemistry undergraduate at CSU Long Beach, I worked in learning centers to hold dedicated one-on-one and group tutoring appointments. I also piloted a supplemental instruction course where I developed companion lessons and resources for organic chemistry I and II. As a graduate student at USC, I studied chemical biology, which is a field that marries organic chemistry with molecular and cell biology. There, I first worked as a teaching assistant for the organic chemistry lecture series before teaching the undergraduate labs. I also had a semester of experience as a Burg Teaching Fellow, where I co-taught the lecture section of the first sequence in the semester. In my independent career as an educator, I now have over 5 years of experience teaching organic chemistry in lecture, laboratory, seminar, and supplemental settings. I have overseen and helped many students master organic chemistry, many of whom have continued to pursue careers in organic chemistry, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and more.

Extremely helpful and patient.

Joshua was very helpful. His systematic approach to organic chemistry problems helped me to better understand the problems that I was attempting. The fact that he teaches one of the labs also helps since that means he really knows his stuff. Overall the lesson was great and I felt like I understood the material better afterwards.

One of the best Ochem Tutor! :)

I had a midterm in a week that I needed to do well on. There were many concepts of Ochem that I was having difficulty understanding and felt extremely overwhelmed to dive into studying, hence I asked Josh to tutor me. Josh spent a few hours going over enols, enolates, carboxylic acids with me and I understood it far better than I would have trying to learn it on my own through youtube videos, podcasts, lecture notes, and book. I am really grateful to Josh for the time he spent teaching me these concepts because not only did I feel that I understood the concepts well, I also felt confident to continue studying on my own. I really like that Josh teaches you how to think for Ochem, he helped me become more of an independent thinker, which really helped me learn Ochem on my own. Thanks Josh :).

Josh is an outstanding tutor in the area of Chemistry. He is very clear and precise with describing each step in every question. Not only does he present the proper way in performing an obstacle, he teaches you and defines the founding blocks that are consisted upon a problem.
