Hi! I’m Naaga, an incoming UC Santa Cruz student studying Biology. I have several years of experience helping students with math and computer science.

Hi! I’m Naaga, an incoming UC Santa Cruz student studying Biology. I have several years of experience helping students with math and computer science.

I tutored students through Homestead High School’s Academic Center, providing one-on-one and small-group support with homework, practice problems, and test preparation. I also served as a TA for an ELD Algebra 1 Workshop, where I helped students strengthen foundational skills in algebra, mathematical reasoning, geometry and measurement, functions, and problem-solving. These experiences taught me how to work with students who learn at different speeds and may need a concept explained in more than one way. My strongest math subjects are Elementary Math, Prealgebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, and Trigonometry. My own math background includes college-level Calculus through De Anza College and a 5 on the AP Calculus BC exam. I also have experience with Java and Python, including completing AP Computer Science A and earning a 5 on the AP exam. I enjoy helping students understand the reasoning behind a solution rather than simply memorizing steps.

A typical lesson starts with figuring out exactly where the student is getting stuck. I’ll ask questions, review the relevant concept, and work through a few examples with them. Then I’ll have the student try similar problems while I provide guidance when needed. As they become more comfortable, I gradually increase the difficulty of the problem and encourage them to explain their reasoning. This helps me identify gaps in understanding while giving the student practice solving problems independently. I especially enjoy working with students who feel that they are “not good at math.” My goal is to make difficult material feel manageable and help students leave each lesson understanding something they previously found confusing. I’m happy to work from school assignments, textbooks, practice problems, or other materials provided by the student or parent.

My mathematics background includes college-level calculus, AP Statistics, and a 720 SAT Math score, and I also received a school award for achievement in Algebra 2. I have studied Java through private instruction for approximately seven years and completed AP Computer Science A, earning a 5 on the AP exam. I have extensive hands-on programming experience creating games, projects, and other applications, and I have also completed advanced programming projects outside of school. I earned 2nd place in Database Design and Applications at the Bay Area Leadership Conference and have experience applying programming concepts to larger projects, including web development. I can help students with Java fundamentals, object-oriented programming, problem solving, debugging, and building projects.
Prealgebra

I enjoy helping students build confidence with foundational math skills before moving into more advanced topics.

I have approximately seven years of private programming instruction and extensive hands-on experience with Python. I have also worked as a paid Python tutor, teaching both individual and group lessons and creating lesson slides, lecture plans, quizzes, and programming projects. During this experience, I guided students through their own capstone projects, with each student completing a final project based on what they learned. I have also developed my own Python projects and games and have advanced programming experience that includes building websites and database-related projects.
Trigonometry

I have extensive mathematics coursework and tutoring experience, including one-on-one and small-group tutoring in algebra and geometry at Homestead High School’s Academic Center. I completed Calculus 1A and 1B at De Anza College and earned a 5 on the AP Calculus BC examination, which required a strong understanding of trigonometric functions and their applications. I also have experience helping students break down complex mathematical problems and prepare for assessments. I focus on building conceptual understanding rather than simply showing students how to get an answer.
