Welcome to my profile! My interest in teaching started when I was a university student in Applied Mathematics at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Though I had – and still have – a strong interest in multiple subject areas, I chose math as my focus because of its importance in a broad variety of fields of study and career paths.

Since 2009, I’ve tutored students from early elementary ages to AP-level high school courses, and since 2017, I’ve taught high school courses in mathematics that cover Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 2, Trigonometry, and Pre-Calculus. I also have six years of experience writing math curriculum content that has helped thousands of students achieve mastery in fundamental math skills through high school.

Since 2020, my primary delivery method of tutoring has been online. I can display all digital whiteboard material for you to easily view during our online session, annotated in high image quality using an Apple Pencil and iPad Pro. Any digitally-written notes during lessons can be saved, shared and downloaded directly to you without delay.

Even if you aren’t actively solving equations and graphing functions in your everyday life, your understanding of math will help you understand and engage in the world around you. A strong math foundation will help give you the problem-solving tools and mental fortitude to navigate the challenges that will come your way, sooner or later.

I understand many students carry a lot of anxiety around math, so I aim to help every student build confidence and a positive relationship to math learning. My goal is to help you build competence and confidence on the way to mastery of your chosen topic. And if any fundamental skill gaps are revealed, I’ll help you address those, too.

I find it tremendously rewarding to invest in someone else’s development, and it’s a privilege I take seriously with every student. Thank you for considering me for your learning needs.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Since 2009, I’ve helped many middle school and high school students achieve Algebra mastery. Whether you are recovering from gaps in your learning history, or you are eager to race ahead of your class, Algebra skills are fundamental to thinking critically about the world around you and problem-solving in a variety of real-life situations. For students in Pre-Algebra and Algebra, I can support your learning for factoring and multiples, prime factorization, ratios and proportions, percents, exponents/powers, order of operations, simplify algebraic expressions with one or more variables, negative numbers, operations with polynomials, fundamental geometry concepts (like area, perimeter, circumference of figures), real/rational/irrational/integer/whole number systems, combining like terms, algebraic properties of equality, solving one-step and multi-step equations, solving multi-step inequalities with variables, fractions and rational expressions, decimals, rate problems, square roots and cube roots, systems of equations, linear functions, graphing equations, slope, absolute value, quadratic expressions and equations, and the Pythagorean Theorem. I can also help you navigate the challenging combination of mathematics and reading comprehension in word problems and applications.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I’ve taught courses and tutored students in Algebra 2 at accelerated and on-level paces. In Algebra 2, we build off of the fundamental skills acquired in traditional Pre-Algebra, Algebra, and Geometry courses. In Algebra 2, equations and inequalities are further categorized and explored, and function concepts are introduced. There is increased emphasis on graphs and the relationships they illustrate. I can support your learning in function concepts (domain, range, Vertical Line Test, parent functions and transformations, combining functions, function composition, inverse functions), quadratic functions and equations, rational functions and equations, polynomial functions and equations, zeros of a function, complex numbers, polynomial and synthetic division, direct/inverse variation, rational functions and equations, conics, exponential functions and equations, logarithmic functions and equations, compound interest, right triangle trigonometry, angle measures in degrees and radians, graphs trigonometric functions, phase shift, inverse trigonometric functions, analytic trigonometry skills, verifying and proving trigonometric identities, solving trigonometric equations, sum/difference formulas, multiple-angle and product-to-sum formulas, Law of Sines, Law of Cosines, vectors and dot products, complex plane, trigonometric forms of complex numbers, linear and nonlinear systems of equations and inequalities, two-variable linear systems, multivariable linear systems, partial fractions, matrix operations, inverse and determinant of a matrix, arithmetic and geometric sequences/series, mathematical induction, binomial theorem, and counting principles and probability. I can also help you navigate the challenging combination of mathematics and reading comprehension in word problems and applications.
Geometry

Geometry

I began tutoring math students from elementary school to high school levels while studying at UCLA as an applied mathematics undergrad. As a math teacher, I’ve also taught geometry classes to high school students who have long struggled in their math courses, finding ways to build up both their competency and confidence in their mathematical thinking and overall problem-solving ability. In geometry, we build on strict definitions of objects like a point, line, segment, ray, angles, and planes, and use these definitions in combination with properties, postulates, and theorems to arrive at conclusions that we prove rigorously, through verbal/written reasoning and two-column proofs. We also dive into logic concepts involving conditional statements and truth values to attain confidence in our arguments. Geometry is a challenging area for many students, which I fully understand as an instructor and a former geometry student myself. It’s rewarding to exercise a different area of mathematical thinking and supplement the algebraic thinking skills that students have been building over the years before they arrive at their rigorous proof-based geometry course.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

Since 2009, I’ve helped many students in elementary and middle school establish the Pre-Algebra skills that will set them up for sustainable math success in their future Algebra course and beyond. With strong Pre-Algebra skills, everything else that is connected by math and science will become much easier to learn and master. For students in Pre-Algebra and Algebra, I can support your learning for factoring and multiples, prime factorization, ratios and proportions, percents, exponents/powers, order of operations, simplify algebraic expressions with one or more variables, negative numbers, operations with polynomials, fundamental geometry concepts (like area, perimeter, circumference of figures), real/rational/irrational/integer/whole number systems, combining like terms, algebraic properties of equality, solving one-step and multi-step equations, solving inequalities with variables, fractions and rational expressions, decimals, rate problems, square roots and cube roots, systems of equations, linear functions, graphing equations, and slope. I can also help you navigate the challenging combination of mathematics and reading comprehension in word problems and applications.
Precalculus

Precalculus

Precalculus students will apply their competence in equations, functions, and graphs as they proceed toward an introduction to calculus concepts. We learn the concept of a limit, use limit notation, understand function continuity and discontinuity, and compute a difference quotient or derivative to determine instantaneous rate of change. To prepare for introductory calculus concepts, I can also support Precalculus students in the mastery of function concepts (domain, range, Vertical Line Test, parent functions and transformations, combining functions, function composition, inverse functions), quadratic functions and equations, rational functions and equations, polynomial functions and equations, zeros of a function, complex numbers, polynomial and synthetic division, direct/inverse variation, rational functions and equations, conics, exponential functions and equations, logarithmic functions and equations, compound interest, right triangle trigonometry, angle measures in degrees and radians, graphs trigonometric functions, phase shift, inverse trigonometric functions, analytic trigonometry skills, verifying and proving trigonometric identities, solving trigonometric equations, sum/difference formulas, multiple-angle and product-to-sum formulas, Law of Sines, Law of Cosines, vectors and dot products, complex plane, trigonometric forms of complex numbers, linear and nonlinear systems of equations and inequalities, two-variable linear systems, multivariable linear systems, partial fractions, matrix operations, inverse and determinant of a matrix, arithmetic and geometric sequences/series, mathematical induction, binomial theorem, and counting principles and probability. I can also help you navigate the challenging combination of mathematics and reading comprehension in word problems and applications.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is typically introduced as early as Algebra and Geometry, through the relationships between sides in a right triangle. Students often explore deeper trigonometry topics alongside Algebra 2 or PreCalculus function skills. Whether in the classroom or at-home tutoring, I’ve helped many high school students make strong connections with the patterns and analytical skills that are developed in trigonometry. I can help you master basic right triangle trigonometry, angle measures in degrees and radians, graphs trigonometric functions, phase shift, inverse trigonometric functions, analytic trigonometry skills, verifying and proving trigonometric identities, solving trigonometric equations, sum/difference formulas, multiple-angle and product-to-sum formulas, Law of Sines, Law of Cosines, vectors and dot products, complex plane, and trigonometric forms of complex numbers. I can also help you navigate the challenging combination of mathematics and reading comprehension in word problems and applications.

Andrew is great for all personality types and learning styles

I have twin seniors who could not be more different. In fact, one of the only things they have in common is how much they struggle with calculus! Andrew has had sessions with each of them individually and he was immediately able to connect with both of them on their level. His attention to detail and proactive style as a tutor made the new experience of tutoring much easier and more comfortable for our sons and both their grades are improving tremendously. I highly recommend him!

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

We’re so grateful we found Andrew to help our son, Jacob, with algebra. With only a couple of sessions before a big test, Andrew was able to quickly identify what Jacob needed and explain the concepts in a way that really clicked. Jacob felt much more prepared and confident going into his test—something we haven’t seen in a while. Andrew was patient, clear, and genuinely encouraging. Highly recommend him for any student who needs targeted support and a confidence boost in math!

Patient and detail-oriented tutor

My daughter has been struggling with her AP calculus. She doesn't usually ask me to reach out to the tutor for additional sessions. She has already had four sessions with him and asked for more to get her final ready. This says a lot. Based on her comments, he is knowledgeable and patient as well as he breaks down complex concept to help her understand the foundation to apply.
