Hello, I’m Erika. I graduated college with a degree in Liberal Arts with the goal of becoming a teacher and that’s exactly what I did. I have taught every grade from kindergarten through 12th grade over the course of the past 13 years. My teaching experience began with middle school and high school choir at a very small private school. From there it expanded to pre-algebra, algebra 1, 6th grade history (during which we focused on geography and Greek mythology), middle school science (general science and earth science), intro to Latin and elementary (k-5) music theory. After 6 years teaching at the middle school and high school level, I switched to teaching first grade. I have taught at the first grade level for the past 7 years and taught a combo 1st/2nd grade class the past year.
During lessons I try to find either a fun or relatable way to draw students into the subject before fully delving into an explanation of the topic. After the in depth explanation, I like to give students the time to work through a bit on their own and know that a student truly understands when they are able to teach it back. I find that students do the best when they are praised for their progress no matter how small. My goal is for students to leave each session with a better understanding of the topic and the tools needed for them to continue to move forward.
