GED

GED

GED study is very similar to California Basic Education Skills Test and requires the same working knowledge of math, reading, comprehension and essay writing. First, it is important to understand what the prompt is requiring the test-taker to answer, then peruse the parts of the question, whether in math, reading or writing, to ascertain the direction for the answer. In addition, outlining the steps to solving basic math or elements of writing a good essay are implemented.

I structure grammar tutoring as follows: ~ Review of current knowledge in grammar - parts of speech and their function ~ Review of basic sentence structure and function of parts of speech Each subsequent session includes: ~ Review of what was learned ~ Introduction at least two new terms, their function and usage in a sentence ~ Application of newly acquired terms to business or school work

In addition, how to analyze and interpret these elements for greater understanding of the meaning of the poem, story or essay and its socio-political importance as a literary work. In the course of discussion, prominent classical as well as contemporary authors and their works from various literary periods are examined.

SAT Writing

SAT Writing

The keys to effective essay writing are to understand the directives given in the prompt, a strong thesis, equally strong supporting information and a conclusion that has insight and a flourish. The ability to outline is important in organizing thoughts and using appropriate transitional words in keeping a cohesive structure to the work. Avoiding "pitfall" phrases will ensure your writing shines.
Spelling

Spelling

For higher level spelling application, vocabulary words are supplied relative to current courses of study or enrichment. The vocabulary words are defined in terms of etymology, grammatical usage, and meaning. Then the word is written in a sentence. At next meeting, a word bank is composed of previous vocabulary words in which the appropriate word is used in pre-prepared sentences and/or matched to its definition. Also, review of phonics, linguistic structure of words and spelling strategies where applicable.

As a high school guest teacher, I differentiate my teaching style to accommodate any learning challenges (such as ADHD or dyslexia) and use scaffolding whenever appropriate for the lesson. Being a study skills tutor, I utilize one or more of these study habits with students.

What an amazing experience!

Doreen helped me interpret an assignment I had for school. I had no clue on how to interpret the assignment or how to even approach the task. Thanks to Doreen's expertise I was able to understand what the Professor was expecting thus I was able to complete my assignment. Moreover, Doreen went above an beyond by squeezing me in her schedule when I contacted her only a few hours before the assignment was due. She jumped right on it and I was able to meet my deadline. I highly recommend Doreen to anybody looking for someone with experience, patience, and flexibility.

Knowledgable and caring tutor.

I had a great experience working with R. Doreen. She helped me with my statement of purpose for graduate school and I am much more confident with my chances of being accepted after working with her. You can tell that she really cares about teaching english and put a lot of thought on little details for my essay. She also was willing to work with me over the phone despite having the flu, which was very helpful because I was in a time crunch. I would highly recommend R. Doreen, especially with help on college admission essays.

Best Tutor Ever

Doreen takes her job very seriously. She is a very well-rounded tutor, the best one I have ever had. I needed to write an essay that was worth 50% of my grade and the instructor was a very hard grader so I asked Doreen for help. I sent her all the class notes, she read them all, and then I gave her a sloppy copy of my essay and she helped organize all my thoughts and helped me clean up my paper. I ended up getting an 'A' on the essay and the instructor said he enjoyed reading it. Doreen is the best because she learned all my class materials and helped me organize it all into the essay. Doreen also helped teach me self-discipline and time-management, which she did not have to, but she cares. So, she is willing to go above and beyond to help anyone. She is great at what she does.
