Hello! My name is Sean, and I am a passionate educator and skilled mathematician. During my four years as a special needs assistant at Oak Grove Middle School, I fell in love with education and mathematics. I returned to school and earned my bachelor’s degree in mathematics with a concentration in teaching, as well as a master’s degree in pure mathematics, at San Francisco State University. While earning my master’s, I was also the instructor for multiple precalculus courses.
Throughout my time at Diablo Valley College and San Francisco State University, I worked as a math tutor, helping college students with a wide range of mathematical backgrounds. As a precalculus instructor, I taught classes of 15–30 students and combined direct instruction with group work and classroom discussions. Between my work with middle school students and my college teaching and tutoring experience, I have learned to adapt my approach to different ages, learning needs, and levels of confidence. My education and experience prepare me to tutor algebra, geometry, trigonometry, precalculus, calculus, and introductory statistics.
I work to create an encouraging yet challenging learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. Rather than simply showing students how to solve a problem, I encourage them to work through it with my guidance and explain their thinking. This helps me understand where they are struggling and gives them practice making their own mathematical decisions. When needed, we revisit foundational concepts or try a different explanation before moving forward. My goal is to help students understand why the methods work, build confidence, and become more independent learners.
