I’m Eric, a current “Top 10% Tutor” on Wyzant. I've been a professional educator most of my life, and have spent the last five years as a full-time tutor and mentor.

I hold a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota, graduating with honors in 2012. I’m a former professor at both Macalester College and UCLA, and I continue to teach part time at Pitzer College. I’ve published articles in multiple professional humanities journals and given guest lectures at Harvard, Brown, and the University of Pennsylvania. I know a lot about what skills are expected from elite students and how to teach those skills.

Tutoring students online is now my primary job, and I love it. After spending many years in many educational roles, I’ve found that my favorite kind of teaching is working with students one-on-one.
I take pride in that I often develop long-term relationships with my students, some of whom I tutor for years. When they have good news to share (like a college acceptance letter), I’m often one of the first people they text.

I don’t simply teach students skills. I teach them how to apply what they learn to their everyday environment and how to use their learning to become an informed, critical, and engaged member of society. This, I believe, is the essence of a good education (a positive side effect of which is that it helps students build excellent college application portfolios.)

I work with all levels of students, but specialize in those looking for challenging, college-prep level curriculum. Past students have gone on to places like Princeton, Dartmouth, UC Berkeley, USC, Amherst, and Barnard College, to name only a few.

I also consider myself a “full service” teacher. I only charge for the time we spend together online, but I’m also available daily to answer emails or texts about whatever questions you may have. This is a free service I provide to all my customers.

ACT English

ACT English

I'm a college professor with a decade of experience prepping students for the ACT. I helped create the ACT curriculum at two separate testing centers in southern California and have helped numerous students score in the 99% (34+) range. You don't have to be a genius to get a top ACT score, but you do need to stay focused. Over the years, I've helped students study "smarter" for the ACT, showing them how the ACT constructs their questions and what specific skills they're testing with their specific question types. In my experience, knowing this often means the difference between a good and a great score. Before college, I myself struggled with the ACT before learning this information, so now I like to give back by teaching others what I've learned. I help people with the ACT English, ACT Reading, and ACT Essay sections. (Sorry, no math). I work with students of all levels and abilities and have developed tips and strategies for every kind of student. I also work with people on all kinds of timelines, ranging from a few days to several months. The ACT doesn't have to be a frustrating experience. Let me show you how that's possible!

American History

American History

I’m Eric, and I’ve been teaching and tutoring history subjects of all types for over a decade. If you’re looking to improve your grades or scores in APUSH, AP Euro, AP world, or any other history class, you’ve come to the right place! I hold a PhD in international history from the University of Minnesota, graduating with honors in 2012. I’m a former professor at both UCLA and Macalester College, have published articles in professional history journals, and given guest lectures at Harvard, Brown, and the University of Pennsylvania. I know *a lot* about history. I'm particularly skilled at tutoring AP History. For over a decade, I’ve been an official APUSH exam judge, and have colleagues who serve upon the development committees of these exams. This means that I not only understand the AP history tests, but am always up to date on any changes. Over the years I've helped literally hundreds of students earn 4s and 5s on these exams. Beyond AP History, I help with everything history related, from understanding basic timelines, to producing history research papers, to learning historiography and historiographical concepts. I also help many students publish history essays for publications like The Concord Review and the International Journal of High School Research, and have helped students working with research programs like Horizon, Pioneer, and Lumiere. Regardless of topic, I take special pride in my ability to explain historical concepts in ways that are easy to understand!
College Counseling

College Counseling

For the past decade, I’ve worked primarily as a professional college counselor and essay editor, helping students find schools that best fit their aptitudes and interests, and guiding families through today’s increasingly complex application process. My students have gone on to a variety of colleges, from local colleges to top-ranked Ivy League schools. Recent student admittances include Stanford, Princeton, the University of Chicago, Amherst, UC Berkeley, Wellesley, Yale, and others. I've also helped students finish a variety of competitive graduate school, law school, medical school, and fellowship applications. Beyond working with students, I’m a current member of WACAC, NACAC, and IECA counseling organizations, and maintain numerous professional contacts with high school and college admissions officers. I'm also a board member and chief college counseling consultant at Middle Tree, a nonprofit college readiness center for low-income students in western Los Angeles County. When working with clients on applications, I take pride in my holistic, student-centered approach. Instead of simply telling students what to say, I provide each student with a structured space to develop their own thoughts, resulting in both better essays and a less stressful experience for them and their parents. I want students to finish with not only the best essay possible, but also with a new awareness of how to effectively communicate to diverse audiences through writing—a skill my students retain long after college. Many have remarked to me that, upon completion of their essays, they have a better sense of themselves and what they're after as they begin college life. Prior to being a college counselor, I earned a PhD in world history and worked as a professor at Macalester, UCLA, and Pitzer colleges. Working as a professor taught me that my true passion was helping young students find their identity and calling (as opposed to doing historical research), so I left academia to become an Independent Educational Consultant. I have experience tutoring students in all types of English classes: AP English Literature and Composition, AP English Language and Composition, American Literature, European Literature, and general fiction and nonfiction. I'm also a current college Professor and have taught college-level writing for nearly a decade at three separate elite schools. I know what writing skills are expected from incoming college students, and how to teach those skills.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I originally became skilled at essay writing in graduate school, where I quickly learned how to make my arguments cogent and concise. Soon, I was teaching other graduate students what I learned. Later, as a college professor, I passed along what I know to dozens of individual students. Now, as a professional tutor, I continue to help people with writing, and have worked with literally hundreds of students on papers for English, history, philosophy, and other humanities subjects. I've also helped students prepare research papers for publication, such as in The Concord Review. Lastly, I've helped hundreds of students polish college admission essays, something I've been highly involved with over the last ten years. See the "college counseling" and "personal statements" sections of my Wyzant bio for more info on this topic!

Teaching these skills to students is what I do best. Finally, I'm a former college history professor with significant experience researching and teaching the past and present of US politics. Personal Statements

I've spent the last decade working as a college essay coach, helping over 200 students. Philosophy

If you can master philosophy you can master almost anything. Without fail, the most successful people I’ve met have all had strong philosophy backgrounds (and I’ve met a lot). I hold a PhD in history with an emphasis on modern philosophy and Enlightenment-era political thought. Whether you want to learn Plato, Aristotle, Bacon, Hobbes, Descartes, Voltaire, Kant, Bentham, Marx, Nietzsche, Foucault, modernism, postmodernism, third-wave feminism, or anything in between … I've been there and can help.

Political Science

I hold a history PhD in history with an emphasis on early modern and modern political thought: Hobbes, Locke, Kant, Montesquieu, Voltaire, Paine, Wollstonecraft, Hegel, and everyone in between. I also have an extensive background in the ideas of Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin, and communism, as well as the ideas of second and third-wave feminism. Finally, I'm familiar (and have taught college classes) on the political ideas of the Founding Fathers, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and other people and ideas from the Revolutionary period.

Writing

Writing

Having trouble starting that paper? We've all been there! Writing rarely comes easy to anyone. Fortunately, I'm here to help. Over the years I've worked with hundreds of students upon all aspects of writing, from outlining to final edits and from basic essays to lengthy term papers. As a published author, I've learned to create powerful, well-organized narratives that resonate with diverse audiences, and these are skills I impart to students during our sessions. In addition, my background in teaching college writing classes gives me a unique skillset as an essay editor: not only do I have over a decade of professional writing experience within elite academic settings, I also have a decade of teaching those skills to students. Finally, I have special experience with helping students draft personal statements and other college essays. I’ve helped students apply to dozens of schools, from local community colleges to the Ivy League. I've also helped students finish a variety of graduate school, law school, medical school, and fellowship applications. Here, my history degree means I approach editing from a narrative perspective: I literally start by having students tell me stories about their lives. As we work together, I help students make these stories more vivid, cogent, and effective in order to demonstrate aspects of their character. Finally, we shape that story to fit the required essay prompts. This “story-first” method means that a student’s experiences and insights remain foregrounded, allowing for powerful narratives that command the prompt and result in focused, compelling essays.

APUSH expert

Eric did a fantastic job tutoring my 11th grade daughter for the AP U.S. History exam. He identified the areas where she needed improvement (i.e., the areas that her AP class at her school fell short) and systematically helped her build her knowledge, skills, and confidence before the exam day. The fact that Eric is a college professor and has been a College Board grader of the APUSH exam for many years comes through in his tutoring lessons. He effortlessly integrates the historical content with exam strategy. During the final 2 weeks before the exam, Eric worked magic by helping my daughter become fully prepared and confident before exam day. We won’t receive her AP score for several weeks, but I believe there is a very high likelihood that she will score at least a 4 (and probably a 5); and, she couldn’t have done without Eric. If you are able to secure time with Eric, then you will be happy with your investment.

Outstanding

We are so grateful for Eric. He is an outstanding teacher who worked with our son for his AP US History and AP World History exams, on which he got 5’s. Thank you so much Eric!

the best history teacher

My daughter has been learning with Eric for two years now. First for AP US history where she got a 5. AP world history this year. She had no interest in history until she met Eric who sparked a fascination with the subject and now she wants to major in history. Eric made history relevant and meaningful and that made her so much more interested in studying the subject. She always looks forward to her lessons with Eric. He has a fool proof method of teaching how to write DBQs that she says she never learned at school.

Amazing tutor!

I can't recommend Eric highly enough as an APUSH tutor! From day one, he provided tons of practice materials and took the time to go over each one with me, ensuring I fully grasped every concept. His dedication and personalized approach made a huge difference in my understanding of the material. Eric's support and expertise gave me the confidence I needed to excel in the class and on my AP test.

The guidance we needed.

Eric worked with our twins to prep them for AP USH. He is knowledgable in what topics will be covered in class. He taught our boys how to write better notes and ask in depth questions relevant to each chapter. We are very grateful for all the love he pours into our boys achievements. Thank you Eric!

Absolutely amazing!!

My child needed help with her first journal style academic paper and Eric helped her throughout the process. Not only was the end result incredible, she learned so much from him in the process and has become a better researcher/writer. I have no doubt that she will use what she learned in college. Very impressive.

Very knowledgeable tutor.

Eric is helping my daughter prepare for the APUSH test in May. He is very knowledgeable about the test and was quickly able to identify the areas she needs to work on. She now feels much more confident and prepared for the test. Eric is an excellent communicator and responds quickly any time we have messaged him with a question. I highly recommend him as a tutor!
