About Anita

Bio

Hello! My name is Anita, and I am both a teacher and a musician. I started taking piano lessons when I was six, and I started teaching piano lessons when I was 16! In fact, some of my first students were two sons and the daughter of a community college music professor who happened to live down the street from us. I was flattered and honored that he chose me to teach his children.

Education: B.A. in Music, University of California San Diego, minors in French Literature and Psychology
Musician: weddings, wedding receptions, children's musical theater plays, church services, Bible studies and retreats, music therapy for a doctor of Osteopathy in La Jolla, CA
Teacher: musical theater, group keyboard lessons, Music Appreciation classes for elementary students, and for high school students for the Visual and Performing Arts requirement
Credential: Vocational Education Designated Subjects Credential in Performing Arts
Tutor: 7 years for middle school and high school core subjects, focusing on math
Spanish: Spanish was my first language, I am 100% bilinugal. I have taught students from Kindergarten through High School using: Glencoe, Buen Viaje, ABekka, The Cat Adventure, Spanish Zoophonics, and many others curricula, including curriculum I created.

When I teach I try to break the concept down to the most basic of steps, to make the learning process easier, stress-free, and hopefully, fun! If a student is struggling, my goal is to be a detective and discover the obstacle to learning, whether it be a gap in knowledge, a misunderstanding, or a lack of confidence.

I look forward to working with you on your learning journey!

My Bachelor's Degree is in Music. My teaching experience is both in private piano lessons, and teaching music in the classroom. I have 30 years of experience giving private lessons. I have more than 20 years of experience teaching elementary school students: music appreciation, group keyboard lessons, recorder lessons, and learning songs for musical theater. I have 6 years of experience teaching VAPA Music Appreciation to high school students for their college entry requirements.

I have taught VAPA Music Appreciation for High School students. A major part of the curriculum is Music History. I have taught this class at a charter school, (where I've been working for the past 19 years), alternating years, for a total of 5 years. Also, to enrich the High School Music Appreciation course, I took an online course through a community college, in the fall of 2016 called "World Music". I added a World Music unit to my Music Appreciation class the following year.
