Greetings! I'm Bev. After growing up in Washington State, I went to California for college and earned a Bachelor's degree in Linguistics and a Master's in Journalism at the University of California-Berkeley. I also earned a certificate in teaching English as a second language, which I put to use at the College of San Mateo helping immigrants become proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English. Since then, I've been able to turn my love of writing into a successful freelance career as an author and content editor for college textbooks, general books on various topics—sharks, the Titanic, and the inner workings of the human body, to name a few—for readers of all ages. I've also written extensively for the U.S. National Park Service and created and edited books for a major history museum.

My tutoring experience began at UC-Berkeley, where I helped struggling undergraduates in the Economic Opportunity Program. More recently I've had the opportunity to work one-on-one with high school students in the 9th through 12th grades, teaching them strategies for completing well-organized, quality writing assignments in courses ranging from English composition and English Literature to History, Economics and the sciences. Because I know that many students arrive in high school, college, and even grad school dreading writing, at the start of each session I take a few moments to put the student at ease and establish rapport. I then guide the session through discussions to clarify the student's understanding of the assignment, assist them (as needed) in identifying resources, and review or strengthen their grasp of standard rules of composition and how to structure a logical presentation. I also provide written and graphic handouts on all these topics as take-homes. I genuinely see this work as a partnership and am happy to review and edit drafts and discuss my thinking on works in progress. I welcome questions and suggestions, and am quick to respond. What matters to me most your success!
