Hi, I'm Jess! I've been a tutor for over five years and in that time, I've helped hundreds of students improve their chess and English skills. I've taught students of all ages in both group and one-on-one settings. Hi, I'm Jess! I've been a tutor for over five years and in that time, I've helped hundreds of students improve their chess and English skills. I've taught students of all ages in both group and one-on-one settings. During lessons, I try to adapt my teaching style to what my student needs, but overall, I'm a very patient and encouraging teacher, and I always try to motivate my students to reach for improvement, even when it seems difficult. I've taught students with ADHD and autism (as a teacher who personally has both ADHD and autism, I'm able to connect with my students and give them the support they need to continue growing and learning).
In college, I studied Creative Writing and graduated Summa Cum Laude at CSULB. My love for writing and English started very young and I love encouraging young learners to find the same enjoyment in it that I did at their age. For chess, I started learning in adulthood and (with a rigorous study regimen) I was able to get over 2000 within just two years of playing online.
I love teaching, but I also really enjoy creating personalized study plans for my students to use outside of lessons to continue their progress. As a teacher, I try not only to teach the subject itself, but I also try to teach my students how to effectively learn on their own (and to enjoy it).

Chess

I've been teaching chess for over five years now to students of all ages and experience levels. As an adult learner, through intense study and a lot of patience, I managed to reach 2000 in two years of playing. For my students, I create study plans for them to use outside of our lessons to continue their studies on their own. During lessons, I do game analysis of my student's games, opening and endgame study, and other exercises to improve tactical and strategic understanding.
English

English

I studied English in college and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in English - Creative Writing. I write novels, as well as short fiction and poetry, and am a very strong essay writer. I believe that creative writing is a great starting point for many people to improve their English skills, whether they're looking to write better essays or to finally finish that novel they started. I have been a tutor for years and am able to adapt to my students' needs and learning styles.

Tammy, 8 lessons with Jessica

Oh yes Jessica is truly a knowledgeable and patient tutor. She exemplifies customer service in every way..

Do: 1. Control the center of the board. 2. Develop your pieces (knights and bishops first). 3. Castle your king. 4. Connect your rooks on the back rank (no pieces in between them). Don't: 1. Move too many pawns. 2. Bring your queen out too early. 3. Move the same piece too many times.

Engaging, Knowledgeable and Fun

Jessica did a wonderful job with my 7 year old. For her first lesson, she did cool creative writing exercises and poems with her that left her really engaged, creating her own poem. The next half, she helped her understand the game of chess. We are looking forward to continual lessons with Jessica
