Hi, I’m Charissa. I scored a 1570 on the SAT and recently completed my M.S.E. in Biomedical Engineering and B.S. degrees in Computer Science and Biomedical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. My tutoring areas are SAT Math and SAT Reading and Writing strategy.
I have 3 years of college teaching and TA experience at Johns Hopkins, where I supported students in quantitative, computational, and systems-based engineering coursework. In that role, I led weekly discussion sections, held office hours, answered student questions, and helped students work through challenging material step by step. I have worked with college students in both group and one-on-one settings, and I have also informally tutored high school students preparing for the SAT. During one summer, I helped my students improve from the low 1300s to 1500+ through targeted practice, score review, and test-taking strategy.
My tutoring style is patient, structured, and student-centered. I like to first understand how a student is thinking, then identify where they are getting stuck and adjust my explanation to their learning style. For SAT prep, I focus on building repeatable strategies, reviewing missed questions carefully, improving timing, and helping students recognize patterns in the test. For math and biology, I break concepts into clear steps and connect practice problems back to the underlying ideas. My goal is to help students build both confidence and independence, so they leave each session with a stronger understanding of the material and a clear plan for what to practice next.
