I have been learning all my life and am continuing my own educational journey in pursuit of a master's degree in teacher leadership, which has updated me on the most current learning theories, philosophies of education, and many other important aspects of teaching. I have two children of my own who are nine and seven years old and a beautiful wife. I am currently teaching government and world history to tenth and twelfth graders at Golden Valley High School. I have been teaching there for ten years, basically since it opened. I have run the learning intervention program for the history department in the past and continue to intervene regularly for my students with the goal of helping them get past whatever barriers are stopping them from learning. I have also worked with independent study students in various situations, some for disciplinary reasons, some for health reasons, so I am very familiar with working with students one on one.
My students would tell you that I am tough and serious about learning, but not overbearing. My students frequently tell me they enjoy my sense of humor and how I structure their class time. In general, they look forward to my class. Our school is very diverse, we have students from over fifty separate cultures, over thirty languages spoken, as well as students with a wide range of learning disabilities. I have worked with students from all walks of life and all orientations. I teach essay writing, ACT/SAT test prep, research papers, critical reading, presentation skills, collaborations skills, as well as the content of my history classes on a regular basis. I also am well versed in how common core has changed what students are expected to know/do. I am one of the specialists at my school in working with English learners as well. I have recently taken many graduate courses in: educational psychology, educational technology, leadership, philosophy, and learning theory. In short, I am a highly qualified teacher that works hard to make sure students are successful.

ADHD

ADHD

I have worked with students with ADD/ADHD since starting teaching. I have students with this learning style in each of my classes. My children also have ADD/ADHD, so I have a very intimate knowledge of how it effects learning and self-esteem.
American History

American History

I have taught American History for ten years, in addition to taking many of my upper division college classes on American history subjects. I became a history major because I was fascinated by American History, especially in regards to how politics relates to individuals based on: class, gender, race, and other cultural groups, in addition to how these things have changed over time.
Baseball

Baseball

I coach high school freshmen baseball in the foothill league, which is very competitive. I have a player I coached playing in AA ball currently, and have much to offer ambitious future players in terms of drills, strategy, and physical conditioning programs. Baseball is also one of the great passions of my life that I deeply enjoy sharing with young people.
Basketball

Basketball

I have extensive experience teaching and coaching. I am currently the freshmen baseball coach at Golden Valley High School. Although baseball is my specialty, I have coached enough basketball to be an effective coach for beginning players as well.
Classics

Classics

As a veteran history teacher, I have learned much about the context of writings which have allowed me to have a very deep understanding of classical literature. I have read most of the classics through my undergraduate studies and as part of my personal reading regime and feel comfortable teaching about them.
Common Core

Common Core

I have taught for ten years full-time, not counting student teaching, so I have been a part of the common core revolution and welcomed it with open arms as a history teacher. I have attended over 60 hours of common core training through my school district, most recently the medal of honor training at the Reagan library. I have learned from a variety of instructors inside and outside of my school district and implemented common core fully into my high school classes.
