About Shelbi

Bio

I have over a decade of experience teaching students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, and ADHD in one-on-one and class settings. I create a warm, low-risk learning environment with opportunities to build self-worth. Most of my students have had negative experiences in traditional classrooms. My goal is for them to build their confidence and understand that they benefit from learning approaches that their previous teachers may not have been trained in.

I am an Associate member of the Orton-Gillingham Academy and have completed over 100 hours of supervised practicum. I'm now pursuing the next level of certification.

Orton-Gillingham is an approach for teaching reading, spelling, and other Structured Literacy topics for students who need more individualized instruction than what they receive in their classrooms.

Additionally, I’m fully trained in Lindamood Bell's "Seeing Stars," "LiPS," and "Visualizing and Verbalizing" programs and have used them for over a decade as well. For Seeing Stars and LiPS, I follow the Orton-Gillingham approach of individualizing instruction based on a student's needs and creating a customized scope and sequence.

I hold an MA in Teaching from Brown University and am licensed to teach Elementary Education (grades 1-6) in MA (working on California licensure).

Executive Functioning

I work and have taught at a school that specializes in neurodiverse learners for the past 10 years. All of my students have had executive functioning challenges. I have been trained by Sarah Ward and have completed Brain Frames training with Bonnie Singer, which has been instrumental in helping these students improve their executive functioning skills.
