I began tutoring in high school as a Kumon tutor, working with children ages 4 - 16. During my undergraduate career, I was an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant and TRIO Upward Bound STEM tutor for various high schools in the San Diego area. During my Master's program, I was also a Graduate Teaching Assistant, as well as a private tutor for high school and college students. I received my Bachelors degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology and my Masters degree in Biology, with my research being in Neurobiology. I am currently studying for the MCAT and applying to medical school during the next application cycle!
I like to begin my session by reviewing with the student about our goals for that session. I also assist the student in organizing their schoolwork and assignments, to help build time-management and organization skills.
I then like to start by asking the student if there are any current topics that the student has been struggling on the most, to help tailor my session towards the need of the student. I like to make my sessions interactive with the student by asking recall questions throughout the session to ensure prior topics are not forgotten. I like to end the session with a short review of what was discussed and finish with any questions, as well as guidance on what to do until our next session. After each session, I keep notes on the student to track their progress and adapt my next session to better fit each individual student
Throughout my sessions, I also like to teach students pattern recognition skills and effective study strategies to help with self-reviewing.
