My name is Alexander Penaflor. I have an MS in mathematics and a BS in physics with a minor in mathematics, both from California State University East Bay. I have both tutoring and teaching experience ranging from middle school to university level classes.

I started tutoring mathematics in my undergraduate program, taught at an accelerated school in Redwood City teaching middle school algebra to integral calculus, and continued teaching university math classes as a masters student. I have also spent roughly over a year tutoring students in ACT, SAT, and SAT physics after my masters program. All of the students I've tutored went on to elite universities in the U.S. such as MIT, UC Berkeley, and Cal Tech.

I approach teaching mathematics with the mindset of anyone is capable of excelling in mathematics if they have the right environment and guidance to grow. Because of my extensive tutoring experience, I've not only helped students understand concepts in mathematics but have also provided guidance on effective studying techniques that avoid brute force memorization and instead provides intuitive understanding of basic fundamentals that can be used to derive more complex concepts from first principles.

Common core mathematics fundamentals are based on a mathematical proofs perspective. Having a masters degree in mathematics, I've excelled in courses that were heavily proofs based. I also taught college courses that used common techniques found in Common Core mathematics.

Knowledgeable, Patient and Reliable Tutor

Alex has tutored several of my students in precalculus, calculus and SAT Math. The students have given nothing but positive feedback about their lessons with Alex. That, paired with his flexible schedule and reliability has made him a wonderful tutor to work with. We will definitely continue to use his services.
