Hi, my name is Nick, and I would love to be you or your child's next tutor!

I am a theoretical physics PhD student and instructor at UC Berkeley. I do research in string theory and nuclear physics, and I am currently an instructor for introductory physics. I specialize in and develop pedagogy for students without strong physics backgrounds. I have tutored hundreds of students across almost all levels and seen first hand the success of my methods for cultivating problem-solving strategies and deeper conceptual understanding. I also frequently take students or passionate autodidacts for research and for pursuing curiosities!

I received my bachelors in mathematical physics from Harvey Mudd College, one of the most rigorous STEM colleges in the country, where I took and tutored classes in physics and advanced math. I have a great passion for teaching especially in the sciences and mathematics at the high school and college level. My goal is to become a physics professor, and I see every student interaction as a chance to become a better teacher!

I have been tutoring for almost 5 years now including as a freelance tutor and as a professional tutor for my college's Upward Bound program. I have received pedagogical training and gone through teaching programs through Upward Bound and UC Berkeley.

I also do research in quantum gravity/string theory and nuclear physics; ask me about it!

Advanced courses taught: AP Physics 1, AP Physics 2, AP Physics C: Mechanics, AP Physics C: Electricity & Magnetism, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Complex Analysis, Partial Differential Equations, Quantum Mechanics, Thermodynamics & Statistical Mechanics, Classical Mechanics, Classical Electrodynamics, Astrophysics, Computational Physics, Special Relativity, General Relativity, Classical Field Theory, Quantum Optics, Particle Physics.

Courses taught and/or tutored at UC Berkeley: Physics 5A/5B, 7A/7B, 7C, 8A/8B.

Approved Subjects

Calculus

Calculus

I have taught AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, college-level multivariable calculus, and complex analysis for over five years. In high school, I received a 5 on the BC exam, and in my research as a physicist I am constantly employing calculus as a tool for solving real world problems.
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

I have been tutoring Differential Equations for over four years! I also took classes in high school and three separate courses in college.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

I have taken three linear-algebra courses at the college-level and have been tutoring the subject for years. As a theoretical physicist, I use linear algebra on a day-to-day basis for my research and my teaching at the college level.
Mathematica

Mathematica

I am an expert in using Mathematica for scientific and mathematical computation. I have been using the software extensively in my research for the last four years.
Physics

Physics

I am driven by the love of teaching physics to students and curious adults at all levels, and at any pace. Physics is an exceptionally challenging subject, and I am adamant in finding strategies for success for all kinds of students. Over the last five years, I have tutored high school physics, AP Physics 1-2, AP Physics C, lower and upper division college courses, and mentored students young and not so young in research. At Berkeley, I teach introductory physics for biology students and engineers (8A, 8B, 7C). I graduated from Harvey Mudd College, one of the most rigorous STEM colleges in the country, with high distinction and a bachelor's in physics, and I am now a theoretical physics PhD student at UC Berkeley where I do research in quantum gravity and nuclear physics.

Great knowledge; committed to student's success!

Nicholas assisted with AP Physics concepts and was available on short notice. It was evident early on that he is an effective teacher/tutor with extensive topic knowledge! He quickly assessed the need and provided suggestions on how to make the best use of the time. He followed up after the session with a message providing an additional resource on the topic. Highly recommend this friendly, knowledgeable resource!

Great tutor

Nick is very patient and knows a lot of good strategies for approaching problems and test taking. He is also great at explaining confusing physics topics and using analogies to simplify concepts. He has helped me understand my electricity and magnetism class a lot better. I would definitely recommend him!

Great experience

Nick has helped me learn both Quantum mechanics and Statistical Mechanics. In my time working with Nick he has been very helpful in both learning how to solve the problems and gaining a conceptual understanding of the concepts. Nick has a great ability to break down problems and explain them in simple terms, a key indicator of great teaching and great understanding of the material. Cordial, patient, and thorough, Nick has been a pleasure to work with and I would recommend anyone seeking help with Physics to tutor with Nick.

Excellent tutor

My daughter is in AP Physics 2. Nicholas has been an excellent tutor for our daughter enabling her to better understand certain concepts. Every tutoring session has led to "A's" on her subsequent tests. We would highly recommend Nicholas.

Knowledgable, has great ways of explaining complicated ideas

I worked with Nicholas in between a couple of my tests for physics 2 and each time my test grades improved. An incredible option for those who want to not just learn physics, but understand the big ideas that come with it.

Knowledgeable and gifted teacher

Nicholas blows my mind every single lesson - I leave my lesson with a deeper understanding of physics and a valuable perspective. We go through all the questions I have thoroughly. Thank you so much!

Knows his stuff!

Nick is a great tutor!!! I am currently studying complex analysis as apart of an electrical engineering class which covers a handful of different high-level math concepts. While my teacher left me confused, Nick was awesome at breaking down the material and helping me with practice problems for my upcoming exam. Highly recommend!

Patient, knowledgable and excellent communicator

I am the parent, not the person who took the lesson. Nicholas is a very good communicator and my son has told me that he is very easy to work with. My son feels a lit better about physics and now feels that the issues he was having will soon be a thing of the past. I am sure that nicholas had complete mastery of physic but he strong point is his ability to communicate in a relaxed, confident manner that puts people at ease.

Excellent tutor

Nicholas was really helpful helping me with Calculus. Aside from general help, he gave me problem solving strategies and asked me conceptual questions about the problems to clarify that I fully understood the task at hand. I will certainly call upon him again for his help and insight.
