Hey, my name is Avery! I’m a student at the University of California, Berkeley studying Economics and Data Science. I tutor math, English, and Chinese, combining a strong academic foundation with experience supporting students from K-12. I earned a 1520 on the SAT (790 Math, 730 RW), scored a 5 on AP English Language and Composition, AP Chinese, and AP Calculus AB. My writing has received recognition from the Harvard International Review Academic Writing Contest and the Scholastic Arts & Writing Awards. My goal as a tutor is to help students understand challenging material and gain confidence in their critical thinking!
I’ve been involved in tutoring and peer mentoring since 2024. At UC Tutor Services, I taught students ages 5-18 in subjects ranging from basic English phonics to AP English Language, and from Algebra 1 to Calculus. As an Instructor at Mathnasium, I worked with one to four K-12 students at a time, adapting explanations and coursework to suit each student’s needs. Through Scholars Without Borders, I prepared English lessons for underserved children in Taiwan, incorporating activities and coordinating with teachers overseas. My school’s Peer Tutoring program has also allowed me to teach math and English to middle school students and collaboration with special education professionals to support students with special needs and IEPs.
I’m patient, encouraging, and understanding with each of my students. In math, I guide students through the problem and reasoning behind each step, encouraging them to explain their thinking out loud to practice independently. In English, I help students build skills in reading comprehension, organizing ideas, and revising their writing with their own voice. For younger learners, I incorporate engaging activities that make practice feel approachable. My goal is to create a friendly learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, learn from mistakes, and leave each session feeling more capable!
