I'm a working writer with a lifelong love of language and a decade of experience teaching and tutoring in persuasive and creative writing, English as a Second or Foreign Language, journalism, ghostwriting, and interviewing techniques. I love helping people learn to organize their ideas and express themselves in writing and to gain confidence as English speakers.
After graduating with a double degree in English and Anthropology from Wesleyan University, I was certified in teaching English as a second/foreign language through the International Teacher Training Organization. I taught ESL to adults for a year at the Boston International Academy, then moved to Spain and taught people of all ages—from ages 3 to 65—for three years. My English teaching style emphasizes practical communication and expression through interactive exercises, lots of practice, and a healthy dose of culture.
I am also a lifelong writer and a current journalist. When I'm not reporting articles for National Geographic, The New Yorker, The San Francisco Chronicle, Smithsonian, and elsewhere, I enjoy helping people gain confidence in writing skills. I spent three years as a college writing tutor during my undergraduate years and have abundant experience editing, both as a professional editor at Bay Nature magazine and as a tutor helping students hone their skills and strengthen important pieces of writing, such as final papers and college admissions essays. Most recently, I taught pitching and feature writing courses at The Writers Grotto in San Francisco.
