I am an Educational Therapist with over twenty years providing learning solutions tailored to each student. I am passionate in changing your experience of completing challenging academic work from worry, frustration, and confusion to joyful, competent and self-directed mastery. You will complete your educational journey!
Together we will develop insights into your strengths and challenges and create learning strategies and tools specific to your needs. I will develop your skills in all aspects of reading, writing, and study skills – from core basic skills to completing complex, dense academic content. I work with middle school and older students for academic and work-related material and exams. I am trained and experienced to work with neurodiverse learners – ADHD, on the spectrum, dyslexia, mood disorders, learning disabilities.
I combine three areas of skills – learning disability specialist, teacher, instructional designer.
My approach is to tackle three tracks at the same time – problem solving for learning challenges, building core skills, and completion of current work. My joy is giving you the boost to complete your work and build your skills. I tutor English, history, and science classes (6th grade, AP, and college level) and prealgebra/algebra.
As a learning disability specialist in colleges, I counseled students on accommodations, study skills, and best use of resources. I taught numerous workshops in test taking, resilience, and study skills. As a teacher I have taught GED test preparation, college transfer skills for reading and writing, and ESL skills for job training. I was a trainer and coordinator for a community-based adult literacy program.
As an instructional designer I wrote the curriculum for a GED classroom, written math and reading skills workbooks for an industrial company.

ADHD

ADHD

Trained and skilled in coaching planning, organizing, and completing academic work with middle school to college students. Beyond those skills, I work with students to build motivation, resilience, and emotional strengths. Masters degree in educational therapy and my students have progressed from being discouraged and studying inconsistently to achieving their highest goals.
Dyslexia

Dyslexia

Trained in Slingerland Methodology, an Orton-Gillingham based multisensory (visual, kinesthetic, auditory) structured sequential learning process to master core reading and spelling skills. Verified as a qualified Structured Literacy instructor by the International Dyslexia Association. By building phonemic awareness (sounds in words), phonological knowledge (sound and letter patterns), and semantic content (definitions, word structure, related concepts) vocabulary acquisition becomes fully learned, This leads to improved reading fluency and comprehension along with accurate expression of concepts in written composition.
Phonics

Phonics

I am trained in Slingerland, one of the Orton-Gillingham methodologies. Working with auditory, visual, and kinesthetic exercises we will build phonemic awareness (isolating the 44 sounds of English), phonological awareness (manipulating the sounds), and sound/letter patterns. In addition, we will work on syllable and accent patterns along with spelling strategies.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

Transitioning from math as calculations to math as equations, variables, data, and graphs can be particularly challenging. Working in a step by step process we will build your skill and knowledge with math. I have extensive experience working with all ages of students who find math frustrating and anxiety provoking.
Reading

Reading

I have taught all levels of reading skills including beginning literacy, GED preparation, and AP English. I have tutored students in various reading-based classes - History, Psychology, Biology - for high school and college level. I enjoy guiding a student into the complexity of meaning in a text. I train students in several strategies - vocabulary building, annotation, reverse outlining, context of other materials, and rhetorical analysis.
Special Needs

Special Needs

I have a Master's Certificate in Education Therapy and have worked with students with IEP and 504 Plans. I have provided remedial educational support, coordinated services with schools, and supported the efforts of families to provide the best education for their children. I build a profile of the strengths and challenges of a student and plan services and provide tutoring that fits the student.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I can guide you in developing your unique study skills by exploring the underlying executive function strengths and challenges. I am an Educational Therapist, Professional as verified by the Association of Educational Therapists. Test taking, work organization, setting goals, comprehension of lectures and texts, time management are some of the areas I can provide coaching leading your academic success. I have experience with high school and college students.
Writing

Writing

I have taught writing for all levels - GED Test preparation, AP English, and college English. I take pleasure in developing your skills in finding the words, the organization of thought, and the skill level to fully express your unique understanding of the assignment. I work especially well with reluctant writers and students with learning disabilities.
