Hi there! My name is Blake. I am a graduate of Stanford University with an M.S. in Earth Systems and a B.S. in Bioengineering. Between teaching at the collegiate level, independently tutoring, and working at a tutoring agency, I have a background in education stretching back over 5 years.

My educational background dates back to 2018, when I worked at Mathnasium as a tutor. I taught middle and high school students (primarily 14 to 18 years old) in subjects ranging from Algebra I to Calculus II. Since then, I've tutored students individually in math, biology, chemistry, SAT/ACT/AP exams, and English, among other subjects. At the collegiate level, I have co-taught undergraduate and graduate students in biochemistry, molecular biology, epidemiology, world agriculture, earth system science, and big data in geophysics, among other courses. These courses ranged from 12 to 300 students in size and involved section teaching and one-on-one and group office hour sessions.

My pedagogy is based on coursework in STEM education, educational systems, and empathic listening and counseling I took in the Stanford Graduate School of Education, as well as my time as a peer counselor. As an educator, I aim to first understand a student's background knowledge, interests, and circumstances. Once I understand a student’s personality and needs, I feel ready to offer educational advice and lessons. At the collegiate level, lessons have included lectures in section and academic assistance in office hours. In the context of math, AP Biology, and other STEM courses, educational input has involved writing individualized practice problems and free response questions, in addition to administering extant practice exams. For essay writing, this has involved brainstorming sessions and providing comments and edits on multiple drafts.

In addition to my professional background, I love the outdoors and running. I am a tea and coffee nerd, a creative writer/poet, and an avid reader. Thank you, and I look forward to you reaching out!

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Blake taught me college level chemistry. He made very hard concepts much more understandable and he helped me perform much better on my final exam than I would have without his help. He also was very accommodating when it came to scheduling our tutoring sessions. I strongly recommend him to anyone looking for a smart and patient chemistry tutor.
