About Matthew

I initially went to school for Computer Engineering and Mathematics at UCSB and have passed all upper division calculus classes required for that degree, but did not continue with all the math theory classes necessary to complete that degree. I transferred to CSUB, where I received a degree in accounting. I have 5 years of experience in the field and am currently studying to take the CPA exam. Because of this, I am very versed and knowledgeable in accounting and should be able to provide tutoring for this subject as well as math.

I am highly mathematically inclined and have always excelled in the subject and regularly implement math in my profession and life in general. I have experience in management, which correlates to teaching, and feel strongly that this, combined my deep understanding of math concepts helps me teach them in a more simplistic way as I understand them.

In addition to these subjects, I have extensive experience in writing and proofreading. I participated in the Academic Decathlon in high school, which gave me intense training with excellent writers and refined my knowledge and abilities in writing. Throughout my college career, I was regularly asked by roommates, and dorm neighbors, many of whom I barely knew, to proofread their college papers, and have learned how to tailor my critiquing to the level of writing of the individual, helping good writers fine tune their works, and helping writers who are still learning, learn what they need to write well and get good grades for their writing.

I am very perceptive to others and believe that I can adjust my teaching styles to accommodate others and tailor my instruction to the student's strengths and understandings. I have always loved teaching others as I love helping others, especially when I am able to help others by sharing the things I know and understand with them. I am a parent of a 3 year old and newborn, patience and guidance are a natural part of my life.

While I wouldn't feel comfortable tutoring college calculus courses, I am VERY comfortable with all forms of Algebra and feel strongly that I can help with high school calculus and geometry as well.

As for accounting, I received a 90/100 on the Financial Accounting Reporting section of the CPA exam. I have yet to study for Tax and Audit sections of the CPA exam, but should be a strong resource for all other accounting classes.

Hopefully my bio wasn't too long to read through, but I pride myself on diversity as well as individual scholastic strengths. I look forward to the opportunity to help others learn and feel good about the subjects that they are now struggling in.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Accounting

I have a degree in Accounting and I am currently studying for the CPA exam. I just received a score of 90/100 on the Financial Accounting and Reporting section of the exam, so I am very well versed in college accounting courses (the FAR exam covers most college accounting courses except Tax and Audit).

Algebra 1

I have a degree in Accounting, but I originally went to school for Computer Engineering and Mathematics and have passed all upper division calculus classes offered at UCSB. I have always prided myself on my high level math skills and look at most things in life with a mathematical approach which makes it very easy for me to communicate this subject to others.

Algebra 2

I have a degree in Accounting, but I originally went to school for Computer Engineering and Mathematics and have passed all upper division calculus classes offered at UCSB. I have always prided myself on my high level math skills and look at most things in life with a mathematical approach which makes it very easy for me to communicate this subject to others.

Economics

I have a degree in Accounting at CSUB. I am a CPA candidate with strong knowledge and understanding of business. I am currently studying for the Business Environment Concepts section of the CPA Exam which covers economics.

Microsoft Excel

As a degreed accountant, excel quickly became a tool I used daily in my work. As I began to come across more challenging tasks, I took to researching new functions to expand my proficiency and efficiency in designing and implementing spreadsheets. I originally went to school for computer engineering which makes understanding excel functions, how to implement them and exactly how they work more natural to me. Further, I enjoy using excel spreadsheets in my free time to coincide with my hobby of fantasy sports. I design and weight my own ranking systems to create spreadsheets that I use for drafting and maintaining information.

Very knowledgeable — Matthew helped me with my Algebra 1 class and has been great. He arrived on time and replied to my emails very quickly. I'm a person who struggles with math and always have, Matthew helped me understand the material better than my college professor has. He's very intelligent and polite, a great combination for a tutor. I learned a lot on our first session and look forward to working with him in th ...
