As someone who is genuinely fascinated by math, it can hurt to see how many people dislike it so strongly. That said, I completely understand why. The way math is taught in schools can be frustrating and isolating for many reasons. All too often, students will see math as a giant obstacle that only serves to remind them of their shortcomings.

It is my goal as a tutor to not only assist students in understanding concepts and problem-solving strategies, but also to help them deal with the psychological impacts of a math class. Being able to forgive yourself when making mistakes and being able to sit in a struggle and not give up are the abilities that will help the student, not just in a particular math class, but throughout their entire academic careers and even into their adult lives. My priorities in tutoring are making sure that the student feels safe to make mistakes, and that when they learn the concepts, all doubts or misunderstandings are addressed right away. In having these priorities, and working with my students to accomplish them, I consistently see the students I tutor gain a sense of confidence in the course and in themselves.

I have received all A's in my math courses throughout my academic career thus far, including in higher-level math courses such as Linear Algebra with Differential Equations, Computational Methods, and Calculus I, II, and III. I am very comfortable tutoring in all levels of math up to and including these courses. During my spring and fall semesters, I serve as a faculty member for Mt. San Antonio College as a drop-in tutor. I tutor all of the courses provided at this college. Though I am qualified to teach upper-division math courses, most of my experience as a tutor has been helping students in lower level courses; my understanding of higher level math does not get in the way of my ability to thoroughly explain lower level math.

A knowledgeable tutor

I enjoyed Hannah’s applied math knowledge. It is helpful for someone who needs to understand their concepts in a different way, more advanced problem solving, etc. I definitely recommend her tutoring.
