Hello, I’m Colin! I finished my AS of Mathematics with honors, and am in my first semester of upper division classes with the ultimate goal of becoming a math Professor. I grew up loving Math & Science. I discovered I wanted to teach when I was in Calculus 1 in College. My professor had a “problem of the week” where you were assigned to a group of four and every fourth week you would create a video explaining how to do an assigned problem. The problem of the week assignments were always my favorite part of the class! I loved doing deep dives into mathematics finding proofs and presenting them not just explaining how to do a problem but why an approach worked. After that class, I began tutoring Calculus and its prerequisites at Sierra College. In addition I have done private tutoring from middleschool-Highschool and pre-Algebra - AP Calculus.
Over the Spring and Summer of 2026 I interned in the Math department. I wrote and graded various quizzes and gave lectures in Calculus I-III which gave me experience teaching to groups ranging from 15-40 students. My internship also gave me a lot of insight into math fundamentals people often struggle with and helped me learn what tools students need to succeed in higher level math classes.
During my 3 terms tutoring at Sierra College I learned a lot about how to tutor from first hand experience and through tutor training offered by the College. Sierra College worked with CRLA to teach best practices for tutoring. After completing the training and a requisite number of tutoring hours I was able to gain my CRLA tutoring accreditation.
My approach to tutoring is collaborative. If you just want an explanation of what you’re studying there are a myriad of resources to choose. The benefit of a tutor is they listen to you! I start tutoring sessions by asking what tutees are working on and how they would explain the topic. This allows me to find out what specifically the tutee needs help with so I can give explanations tailored to their needs.
