About Greg

Hi Students,

I graduated with a B.S. in Computer Science from UC Davis and I earned my MBA in Finance at CSU Hayward (East Bay). While I was at UC Davis, I placed 2nd in the Undergraduate Mathematics Exam and represented UC Davis in both the Putnam International Mathematics Competition and in the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) Western Regional programming competition.

While I love working as a consultant (more on that in a subsequent paragraph), I also really enjoy math and have competed in mathematics competitions from grade school through college (some are listed above). I have also home-schooled our two children for grades K – 8 and helped them with homework in all subjects at every level. One is now at UC Berkeley and the other is doing well in public high school – both of which I am still able to help. The subjects I best remember helping my own children with include Algebra 1 & 2, Geometry, and Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Discrete Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and programming in Java and Scheme. I took many math classes in college before deciding I didn't want to be a math major. I can best help your student in the math and sciences and sometimes in the social studies.

I find math problems interesting and I am most interested in being able to help others see math in a similar light. While I strive to make math fun for all, I expect to at least make it understandable and manageable for you. Hopefully I can break it down, answer your questions, and explain it another way that works with your learning style and builds off of your current level of understanding regardless of where that is. My job is to solidify your foundation and increase your current grasp on the subject matter to help you meet and surpass your goals.

I did 2 years of public speaking in high school, including 1 year of Varsity level Oxford Style Debate. I qualified to compete at the state level in Original Prose and Poetry. My career allows me to speak publicly every so often, too.

Now that you’ve heard about how I want to help you, here is some background on my own career. I am a Senior Business Intelligence Consultant / Architect and have been working as a software / database / business intelligence consultant for about 20 years. Through this work I have consulted for well-known companies such as Microsoft, Hyperion, Oracle, Clorox, Wells Fargo, Visa, Bank of America and many others. I have also spoken many user conferences including the PASS Community Summits which are known for hosting “the world's largest, most-focused, and most-intensive conference for Microsoft SQL Server and BI professionals.”; North American Hyperion User conferences; TemTech User Conference; and Adage User Conference. I hold multiple certifications from Microsoft and Hyperion. I am the author of a BrainBench exam.

Lastly, I like taking tests and I believe I can help you get an upper hand on many standardized tests with different tricks and techniques when you just don't know which answer is correct.

If you have any questions on my experience or anything pertinent to tutoring in general, please send me an email and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

I hope to hear from you soon!

Greg replied on 10/22/2016

While Karleen is correct that I checked my phone and answered it during her session - I was on the call for under a minute. I have a wife and two children and if one of them calls when I am tutoring I will take the call because it must be important or urgent since they know I am tutoring.

It is unfortunate that Karleen felt that while I was awesome and a great tutor, she rated me a 4 because she comes after my family.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Computer Science

I have a BS in Computer Science from UC Davis. While there, I represented the university in the Association of Computing Machinery's Western Regional Programming competition as well as, the Putnam International Mathematics Competition. I earned A's in almost every computer science class I took. I have written graphic's programs that modeled FIGs, modified UNIX kernels, written compilers. Professionaly, I provided application architecture consulting services to Microsoft for about 1 year.

UNIX

I have a degree in Computer Science from UC Davis. We developed on the Unix BSD 3.9 and 4.3 versions. While at PG&E I administered a Sun Solaris machine which is a flavor of UNIX. Many of my clients used to run Unix and I would be tasked with configuring the environment for our benefit.

Excellent tutor!

Greg tutored my daughter and helped her get caught up with three weeks of Physics that she missed while she was ill. Then he tutored her to prepare for the ACT Math test. He is very patient and knowledgeable. He understood her particular learning style and was able to make the lessons easy for her to understand. Highly recommend him.
