I am Joseph D., an aspiring tutor with the desire to teach mathematics and chemistry. Previously, I have taught mathematics, chemistry, and elementary statistics at San Francisco State University as a lecturer. During my time at the university, I discovered that some of my students struggled to perform well in their courses. To help the students, I taught them the importance of building problem-solving strategies. Doing so helped them improve their skills, work ethic, and confidence in their class. I have office hours for students to receive help and I provide them challenges to build their mathematical skills and improve their critical thinking skills. I have taught calculus, precalculus, elementary statistics, remedial algebra, and general chemistry lab courses during my time in San Francisco State University. My philosophy in teaching is based on mastering the fundamentals of the subject, connecting concepts together between different disciplines in science and math, encouraging critical thinking, and applying concepts and topics in everyday applications. With my teaching experience, I plan to apply these skills to tutoring students that need guidance and help to succeed.

Please contact me when you have questions. I am looking forward to working with you and to building your foundations in mathematics, elementary statistics, or in chemistry.

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I excelled in high school. Skills in this course are applied extensively in Algebra II. Previously I helped classmates to execute problem-solving skills such as simplifying basic expressions, graphing functions, solving equations, and word problems.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I performed well in my high school. I helped classmates to work on fundamental concepts such as curve-sketching, solving equations, basic linear algebra, and exploring behaviors of algebraic and non-algebraic functions. Step-by-step approaches to solve these problems were implemented to master the subject, which can be applied in trigonometry and precalculus.
Calculus

Calculus

I performed well in calculus at high school and college. I have taught Calculus I and II during my time in San Francisco State University and I have covered topics including limits, derivatives, integrals, curve sketching, solving differential equations, and infinite series. Problem-solving skills such as pattern-recognition, graphing, re-writing and simplifying expressions, and backwards approach are widely used. Skills in calculus are applied in advanced courses in math, science, and engineering.
Chemistry

Chemistry

I have taught over three years in preparatory and general chemistry lab courses in San Francisco State University. I utilized problem-solving skills such as critical thinking, recognizing patterns, understanding given information, performing calculation in a step-by-step way, applying concepts outside of the classroom, and maintaining appropriate units. I also ran office hours for students and I also helped them with their coursework for the lecture portion of general chemistry.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I performed well in junior high school. The skills in prealgebra are necessary to master algebra classes in high school. By mastering the subject, I am able to excel in Algebra I and II, and geometry. I can apply my experience for helping students to strengthen their foundations in prealgebra. This is also needed for statistics to perform basic calculations.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I have taught precalculus courses during my time in San Francisco State University. I covered mathematical concepts such as plotting curves, solving algebraic and non-algebraic expressions, evaluating trigonometric functions, and exploring properties of functions. I implemented a step-by-step approach to perform these math operations such as determining patterns, simplifying expressions, using figures, and the backwards approach. Skills are widely used to study calculus.
Statistics

Statistics

I have taught elementary statistics in San Francisco State University for over 3 years. I covered the fundamentals of sampling techniques, descriptive statistics, basic and compound probability, probability distributions, random variables, the binomial distribution, the normal distribution, sampling distributions, the central limit theorem, confidence intervals, estimation, and hypothesis testing. I have studied statistics and linear models at San Francisco State University when I was a graduate student, and I can apply my knowledge to tutor any topics in statistics.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

I have taught precalculus courses with emphasis on trigonometry during my time in San Francisco State University. I covered topics on building the unit circle, establishing the definitions of trigonometric functions with the unit circle and the right triangle, evaluating trigonometric expressions using the unit circle, exploring and graphing trigonometric functions, inverse trigonometric functions, and right triangle trigonometry. I used techniques of problem-solving such as determining patterns, performing computations methodically, and drawing figures and plots. These topics in trigonometry are applied in calculus, science, and engineering.

Helpful and knowledgeable

Joseph is knowledge about Calculus and has helped me tremendously with my homework and understanding difficult concepts. I honestly don’t think I’d get through the class if I didn’t have his help. I definitely recommend him as a tutor!
