I am a certified teacher with ten years of tutoring and classroom experience who is passionate about teaching reading and writing - especially through the arts. Originally an SAT/GRE tutor, in 2013 I earned my teaching certification through Teach for America, then continued as a Creative Expression Teacher and Arts Infusion Specialist in a Title 1 School in Oklahoma. In 2014 I founded and taught theater at "Inside-OUT", an arts summer camp for kids from low income communities. I have been tutoring and running after school art programs for the past six years. I am also a playwright and screenwriter who recently graduated with an MFA in Dramatic Writing from the University of Southern California, where my work was a finalist in the 2021 Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition.

What I have learned through my teaching is that the arts engage students and help them find new ways of understanding, memorizing, and processing. If your child is struggling with reading, writing, or critical thinking, I will diagnose their specific needs, then we will explore engaging ways to build that skill. Perhaps we learn reading comprehension by acting out the story, or maybe we learn letter sounds through dance moves. If they're 9 years old or older, we'll write essays about issues they care about and novels from their own imagination. Whatever we do, I will be receptive to your child's individual learning style and interests. This works especially well for kids with special needs.

For high schoolers and adults, I teach specific writing tools that apply in all settings and can be built upon. I break writing down to its basic structures, and we build from there, adding craft and creativity on top of clear organization. If you are struggling with essay writing, english language acquisition, or reading comprehension, please do not hesitate to reach out!

As a Lead PreK Teacher in Oklahoma where Early Childhood Education is included in public school, I spent two years directly teaching phonics and phonological awareness to our youngest learners. In 2010 I graduated from Vassar College with a BA in Drama, and moved to NYC to pursue playwriting and directing. In 2014 I founded a summer arts camp called "Inside-OUT" where I taught young children how to write their own plays. Knowledgeable and patient tutor.

Talk about patient! My 7 and 9 year old are struggling with reading comprehension and writing and Carly is helping them grasp techniques by researching their favorite topics. The best thing is my boys are excited to do their sessions bc she makes it fun and engaging for them.

Engaging and Fun!

Carly kept my five-year-old's attention on a fun art project for an hour. The best virtual experience we've had thus far. My daughter was very proud of her art work! We would definitely recommend Carly.
