As someone who loves to learn but has a unique learning style, I am a strong believer in idiosyncratic teaching. I do not believe that anyone is truly "bad at" math or any other subject; they simply have not found an approach that works for them. It is my goal to help as many students as possible find the learning style that works for them and discover the true scope of their abilities.

The word "philosophy" is derived from the Greek for "love of wisdom." It is therefore quite fitting that I chose to study philosophy in college. Knowledge (and the journey of acquiring it) is my favorite thing in the whole world. The universe around us is a fascinating machine, and every academic subject is meant to provide us with insight into how it works and how we can engage with it in greater ways. Unfortunately, thanks to the rigidity of the school system and the classroom setting, many students are never encouraged to make that connection. The result is that they find themselves increasingly alienated from the world around them, which seems overwhelmingly opaque. It is therefore critical to help students make the connection between academics and their day-to-day interests and lives in a way that makes the material not only relevant but exciting.

I place a huge importance on the value of curiosity, passion, and fun in learning. I find the processes of learning and problem-solving exhilarating, and my strategy for tutoring hinges on helping my students discover their own love of knowledge. While many students seek help solely for the purpose of passing a class or improving their grades and do not believe it would be possible for a particular subject to interest them, I will go out of my way to help the student forge a personal connection with the material in order to improve comprehension through engagement. For this reason, I like to spend some time learning about my students as individuals, enabling me to gain insight into their learning styles, their approaches to problem-solving, and what keeps them interested.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I received a Bachelor's degree from Pomona College in 2014 and have been working as a tutor for almost ten years. In high school, I was an advanced math student who received a 5 on the AP Calculus Test. Math remains my favorite subject to tutor. I try really hard to determine each student's unique learning style and explain the material in a way that makes it make sense to them. I put a strong emphasis on ensuring that the student actually understands *why* it works, not just how.

Grammar

Grammar

I was raised by two grammarian parents, so perfect grammar was hammered into my head from a young age. I went on to receive a perfect score on the writing portion of the SAT and major in a highly writing-intensive field (philosophy) in college. I have also taught myself the fundamentals of several foreign languages (German, Spanish, and Mandarin), a process through which my understanding of grammatical terms has been repeatedly reinforced.
GRE

GRE

In 2021, I received a score of 339 on the GRE. I have a Bachelor's Degree from Pomona College in philosophy with a minor in computer science. I take a methodical yet adaptive approach to test-taking, simultaneously emphasizing both subject matter and test-taking strategy. I make an effort to observe students' strengths and weaknesses and target the areas that need the most work.
Logic

Logic

I received a Bachelor's degree from Pomona College in 2014, where I majored in philosophy and minored in computer science, both of which required coursework in formal logic. I have been working as a tutor for almost ten years, mostly in math and programming, and I consider it a treat when I get the rare logic student! I try really hard to determine each student's unique learning style and explain the material in a way that makes it make sense to them. Vocabulary

Vocabulary

As someone with a background in both creative writing and a writing-intensive academic field (philosophy) where precise and unambiguous language is of the utmost importance, I take vocabulary very seriously. I emphasize the importance of knowing not only the meanings of words, but the nuances present between words with similar meanings. I have been called the "human thesaurus" by acquaintances for my ability to come up with the exact word needed for a particular context.
