I taught at an alternative high school in Portland, Oregon. There, I realized that teaching in a traditional high school classroom was not for me. I started a math tutoring business in 2017 in Portland. Since then, I see between 25-32 students per week. I also have managed other tutors and their students’ growth. As a result of covid-19 all my tutoring has gone remote, so I can work with my students from anywhere. I just moved back to Tucson after leaving when I was a child.
I had an extremely hard time with school growing up. I am dyslexic. I grew up navigating self-advocacy, accommodations, and equity in education from a very young age. What fundamentally made the difference for me as a young adult were two things: People truly believing that I could do it which empowered me to feel the same, and learning the best ways to learn for me. Through my growth in my own metacognition, I was able to find what worked and what didn't work. I still use many of these strategies today. This is how I found myself in education, I know that if I hadn't had the mentorship or support-system at school, I would have never made it. I am a passionate educator and love teaching math.
