Looking for help with science or writing? I've been tutoring science subjects and writing for fifteen years. I've tutored at universities in New York, Tacoma, Tucson, and Nashville, as well as privately, online, and through the National Science Foundation. In the past I have also done advising for freshman science majors, run science workshops for young teens, and worked in ecology and marine biology labs. Science is my passion and I have experience with most fields of biology and marine science (my main areas of expertise being ecology, oceanography, marine biology, AP biology, and genetics).

I'm also a college counselor and have experience guiding students through the application process. My writing and editing experience help me work with students to craft college essays and personal statements. I can also help with transferring, locating campus resources, and general mentoring--especially for science majors (but I can help with any major).

I have a lot of experience tutoring online so am willing to work with students if online tutoring is preferred. I have completed tutor training courses for CRLA certification so I know how to properly structure lessons and adapt teaching styles. I have experience working with students with learning differences.

Approved Subjects

Biology

Biology

My degree is in biology and it's been my passion for as long as I can remember! I've tutored biology classes for over fifteen years and worked for the National Science Foundation. I can generally tutor any biology class--elementary to graduate coursework.
College Counseling

College Counseling

I worked as an academic adviser for freshman science majors and was also a student mentor for two years. Responsibilities included helping students make class schedules, creating degree plans, and finding scholarship/internship opportunities. I also helped students look into graduate programs and pointed them to useful resources on campus (such as tutoring programs, library databases, and relevant clubs). I later became a college counselor and helped students with personal statements, essays, and the common app. I'm also able to help narrow down majors or choose universities.
Ecology

Ecology

My degree was in biology with an ecology/animal biology concentration. I have worked in two ecology laboratories and participated in ecological censuses. My focus during graduate school revolved around getting the public involved in ecological research, giving me a unique perspective as a science educator.
Genetics

Genetics

Genetics was always a major concentration for me as I worked on my biology degree. I took every genetics course I could at both undergraduate and graduate levels. At this point I was also offering walk-in genetics tutoring at a New York university. After finishing college, I continued to take genetics courses online. Later, I covered genetics stories for a science news website. Genetics is my absolute favorite class to tutor!
Grammar

Grammar

I worked as a professional writer for over ten years and a professional editor for six years. I have edited everything from tea blogs to fantasy novels. I love helping students with writing and grammar. My speciality is academic essays but I can generally help with any writing project.
Literature

Literature

I have always been interested in literature and was known for checking out a dozen books at a time from the library! I like to share my expertise with students taking literature courses. I have worked as a professional writer and editor so can help with essays.
Microbiology

Microbiology

My degree is in biology and I can tutor most biology subjects, including microbiology. I took microbiology courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Microbiology has always interested me and I love to guide new students when it comes to navigating the course.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I have worked as a professional editor/proofreader for five years and have edited everything from tea blogs to fantasy novels. My speciality is academic writing (such as college essays) but I can proofread almost anything!
Writing

Writing

I worked as a science writer for six years and have been writing professionally for twelve years. During an internship, I took a full-length resume writing course at Morgan Stanley, a major financial services corporation. Although my specialties are mainly in academic and science writing, I'm able to help with most writing classes.
Zoology

Zoology

I've always been fascinated by zoology subjects and continuously built my undergraduate schedules around taking zoology courses. I previously worked as an animal educator, giving overviews of basic zoological concepts to kids. One of my hobbies outside of academics is exotic animal care which has given me unique knowledge of many of the Animal Kingdom's strangest creatures!

Resourceful and patient tutor

I have worked with Stephanie for two semesters for my marine mammal biology course as well as my undergraduate senior thesis on microRNAs. She has been beyond helpful with keeping me on track and working with me to complete writing assignments and plan out my thesis. During our sessions we would not only proofread my writing, but she would help me understand complex marine biology topics and organize my ideas in a clear and concise manner. Stephanie is also very enthusiastic about marine biology in general and it is clear that she loves to teach her area of expertise. She really just has knowledge in a variety of areas, so I would definitely recommend working with her, especially for any writing or biology-related needs.
