About Maryah

Bio

I teach Standard, Levantine and Iraqi/Gulf Arabic, mostly to beginners and elementary-level adults, with a focus on useful, conversational language so that you can go immediately to the Halal cart in your neighborhood and practice your Arabic. Within weeks, my students are able to welcome Yemeni parents to parent-teacher conferences, reassure Emirati mothers in the delivery room, and describe their family to Lebanese in-laws, just to name a few examples. Within weeks, my students are able to welcome Yemeni parents to parent-teacher conferences, reassure Emirati mothers in the delivery room, and describe their family to Lebanese in-laws, just to name a few examples. Currently, I am beginning a PhD in Second Language Acquisition and Teaching of Arabic at the University of Arizona, and working as an instructor in the Flagship Arabic program.

I first learned Arabic in Peace Corps Jordan, and have an MA in Near Eastern Languages with a concentration in Arabic language from Indiana University - Bloomington with a 4.0 GPA. In 2010-2011, I received the premier CASA I Fellowship to study advanced Arabic language at American University in Cairo. I also have a Certificate of English Language Teaching for Adults (CELTA) with distinction from International House - Budapest and Cambridge University.

Arabic

After 4 years living in Jordan and a Master's in Arabic from Indiana University, my fluency and accent are good enough that I have often been mistaken by Jordanians as a native speaker of Jordanian Arabic. Currently, I am beginning a PhD in Second Language Acquisition and Teaching of Arabic at the University of Arizona, and working as an instructor in the Flagship Arabic program.
English

English

I have a BA in English Literature with honors from Goucher College. During my MA, I worked for Indiana University as a writing tutor, helping native and non-native speakers of English write papers (up to and including dissertations) in all subjects from literature to natural and social sciences. At Bell Amman in Jordan, I created and taught an academic writing course for International Baccalaureate students. I can help you research better, read better, write better, and edit and proofread your own work. Whether English is your first or fifth language, I'll help you identify your weaknesses and develop strategies to improve in those areas, as well as tactics to catch your common mistakes when you write.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I hold a Certificate of English Language Teaching for Adults (CELTA) from Cambridge University and International House/Budapest, but I've also taught children as young as the first grade. When I was a writing tutor at Indiana University, I was the generally acknowledged expert at working with ESL students, and was asked by the director to provide a training workshop to other tutors on working with non-native speakers of English. Later, as a teacher at Bell Amman in Jordan, I specialized in working with beginners, but taught at all levels. I was chosen by Bell Amman to run a program in another city by myself, which was highly praised by the client organization. I also assisted with curriculum development in ESL and academic writing.
Proofreading

Proofreading

My specialty is in working with non-native speakers of English, including thesis and dissertation proofreading. I also have experience with grant writing, fiction, blogging and more. I am prepared to both help you proofread your work, and to teach you how to become more self-sufficient as a proofreader.
