Hi, I'm Helena! I'm a biochemist with a Master of Science degree and years of hands-on experience conducting research on cell signaling and protein interactions. My work has resulted in six peer-reviewed publications in top scientific journals, demonstrating that I don't just teach science, but actively practice it! During my graduate studies, I not only developed deep expertise in biochemistry and molecular biology, but I also discovered my passion for teaching and mentoring. As a Teaching Assistant for both biochemical lab techniques as well as general chemistry, I had the privilege of working with university-level students, helping them hone complex scientific topics by applying real-world practice and building confidence in their scientific abilities.

My tutoring philosophy is simple: every student learns differently, and cookie-cutter approaches don't work. I take the time to understand your unique learning style, academic goals, and any challenges you're facing. I create deeply personalized lesson plans that meet you where you are, using analogies, visual aids, real-world examples, and hands-on problem-solving to make complex concepts click. I'm patient, non-judgmental, and genuinely invested in your success. My approach is holistic: I don't just help you memorize facts for the next exam; I help you build lasting understanding, develop effective study strategies, and cultivate the critical thinking skills that will serve you throughout your academic and professional journey.

Outside of science, I'm an avid wedding photographer with work published in photography magazines, a rock climbing enthusiast who appreciates the problem-solving parallels between climbing routes and scientific challenges, and someone who believes that learning should be both rigorous and enjoyable. I bring this same creativity and adaptability to my tutoring — finding innovative ways to explain difficult topics and making our sessions engaging rather than intimidating. Let's work together to unlock your potential!

ACT Science

ACT Science

The ACT Science section tests data interpretation and scientific reasoning—skills I've developed extensively through my biochemistry research career. My experience designing experiments, analyzing datasets, and interpreting graphs and tables directly aligns with ACT Science requirements. As both a researcher with multiple publications and an AMWA-certified medical writer, I excel at quickly reading scientific passages and identifying key information under time pressure. I can teach students the critical thinking and data analysis strategies needed to navigate the ACT Science section efficiently.
Biochemistry

Biochemistry

During my graduate research at the University of Arizona, I specialized in GPCR receptor signaling, protein-protein interactions, and cellular metabolism. My thesis research on time-resolved BRET and receptor phosphorylation demonstrates expertise in protein structure, enzyme kinetics, and signal transduction pathways. I have authored multiple peer-reviewed publications and a book chapter on biochemical mechanisms. My AMWA certification confirms my ability to communicate complex biochemical concepts effectively to students at all levels.
Biology

Biology

My biochemistry MSc research at the University of Arizona focused on GPCR signaling, providing comprehensive expertise in cell biology, molecular biology, and genetics. I have hands-on experience with core biological techniques including molecular cloning, Western blotting, fluorescence microscopy, and genetic analysis. My multiple peer-reviewed publications and book chapter demonstrate deep understanding of biological principles from the molecular to organismal level. My research presentations at scientific conferences show my ability to make sophisticated biology accessible to diverse audiences.
Chemistry

Chemistry

My biochemistry MSc research required extensive application of chemical principles including equilibrium, kinetics, molecular interactions, and analytical techniques. My laboratory work involved time-resolved BRET experiments, receptor-ligand binding studies, and protein phosphorylation analysis—all requiring strong chemistry foundations. My AMWA certification and publication record reflect my ability to explain complex chemical concepts clearly. My research experience with spectroscopy, chromatography, and quantitative analysis provides practical knowledge of chemistry applications.
GRE

GRE

As a biochemistry MSc graduate from the University of Arizona with multiple publications, I have demonstrated the quantitative reasoning and analytical skills central to GRE success. My research required statistical analysis, data interpretation, and problem-solving abilities that directly translate to GRE preparation. My experience navigating graduate school admissions provides practical insight into GRE strategy and the specific content tested. My AMWA certification demonstrates my ability to explain complex concepts clearly and systematically.
