My name is Dwight, and I’ve been privileged to teach both college prep school Honors English and various college writing courses to motivated students for many years. I’m passionate about helping students to learn how to properly analyze good literature and write cogently and clearly about it. My writing courses focus on helping students learn how to clearly organize an essay or paper and convincingly argue its thesis with solid factual evidence from either a literary text or a student’s research. During my years of teaching, many students have returned from college to personally thank me for teaching them both how to analyze literature and to write well about it.

My collegiate academic and professional backgrounds are varied. Academically, I hold two Masters degrees in both Religion and Humanities, with an emphasis in literature, as well as all of the requisite advanced courses in English to pursue a doctorate in literature. My GPAs were 3.8 to 4.0.

The Honors English courses that were my regular specialties were American and World Literatures. Professionally, in addition to being an English teacher, I retired honorably from both the U.S. military and our U.S. Defense Department.

Kindly feel free to retain my tutoring services to help you with any aspect of your English courses, as well as assisting you to write about them well.

AFOQT

AFOQT

As a 23 year career military officer, who retired from the Pentagon in 2006, I have an expertise in helping college graduates to pass the Defense Department's officer candidate enlistment tests. Although my professional teaching experience was in all aspects of English and literature, I hold two graduate degrees, completed all doctoral courses for a PhD in literature, and have the equivalent of a minor in math from my years at West Point. I routinely tutor students who need to prepare to take the AQOQT in order to become an Air Force Officer.
ASVAB

ASVAB

As a retired US naval officer, with over 23 years of military service, I am uniquely qualified to both tutor and mentor students who seek careers in the military, based upon their test scores on the ASVAB, AFOQT, and OAR.
College Counseling

College Counseling

During my years of teaching Honors English, I advised my students on how to write their college admissions essays for entry to prestigious universities, assisting them in choosing a viable topic for the essay, brainstorming with them on how to begin the essay writing process, proofreading and revising their rough drafts, and helping them finalize their essay submissions. As an active tutor today, I regularly assist 12 grade students in the same admissions essay writing process for acceptance to top colleges.
English

At prestigious college preparatory schools, I regularly taught World Literature, American Literature, and English Literature. Additionally, I taught freshmen Literature and Composition courses at several universities. Currently, I am a STAAR English 1 and II tutor.

Knowledge tutor

Dwight is very patient and understanding. As a non-native English speaker, he takes his time to explain to me why certain word choices work better as we went over my statement for the Navy's OCS program. His background in the Navy provides me with some insight into the style and tone while writing the essay. I 100 percent recommend him to anyone pursing a career in the military.

Best essay tutor one could hope for!

I don't think I've found a tutor better than Mr. Dwight! He truly cared about my essays for college applications as he'd review them prior to our meetings and still give me his undivided attention. I have been able to refine my essays for many top universities. His skills in language, vocabulary, sentence structure, and grammar are unmatched. There is no need to look further for a tutor, guide, and mentor through the college application process.

Last minute lifesaver!

Dwight did an excellent job helping me decipher 6 poems. I now understand imagery, tone, and figurative language much better and can apply it to these complicated poems. He really knows literature and is very calm and patient answering my questions. I highly recommend him and I will be using him in the future.
