About Michael

Bio

I am a woodwind specialist with a degree in saxophone performance from the University of Arizona. I have been performing and competing since the fifth grade. Before moving to Phoenix in 2020, I arrived in Tucson in 2010. While there, I performed in dozens of groups playing many various musical styles including classical, jazz, musical theater, rock, funk and avant garde. Music has provided me with the opportunity to travel all over the world, from London to China and Mexico to Peru.

I opened my private lesson studio in 2012. Since then, I have cultivated a deep passion for creating personalized lessons for motivated students. My students have included beginners as young as eight years old to advanced players well into their retirement. They have gone on to win scholarships, awards, and positions in high-level performing groups.
Lessons center around a solid classical foundation of performance and music theory. However, students often make the most progress when they are striving toward projects that they're excited about. With this in mind, the lessons are frequently supplemented with transcribing and learning melodies suggested by the student, games involving ear training and improvisation, interactive note-entry activities, and many more engaging and practical projects.
I'm looking forward to sharing my passion with you!

Clarinet

Clarinet

I have played clarinet for over 10 years. I have played in numerous professional settings including musical theater productions and live performances. I have taught clarinet privately for 6 years.
Ear Training

Ear Training

My musical focus for the past 4 years has been towards playing Jazz, and a crucial aspect of jazz improvisation is ear training. Drawing on techniques from top Jazz professors, I use intervals, triads, chords, and real applications of all three to help students become familiar with musical structures and be able to identify them without looking at sheet music. I have transcribed over 10 Jazz songs and solos by performers such as Phil Woods, Charlie Parker, and Sonny Stitt. I also have some experience with piano and have used this experience to learn Pop songs. My past Aural Skills professors have assigned to assist other students in their ear training progress and I have conducted dictations in class.
Flute

Flute

I have played flute for over 10 years. I have played in numerous professional settings including musical theater productions and live performances. I have taught flute privately for 6 years.
Music Theory

Music Theory

I have completed four years of collegiate music theory training with a 4.0 GPA. My own musical projects have expanded my theoretical knowledge. These projects include transcriptions, compositions, score analyses and improvisation.
