I earned a JD from Lewis and Clark Law School, in Portland, Oregon, and a BA in International Studies from Hawaii Pacific University, where I graduated magna cum laude. I completed my 4 year degree in 18 months, having earned credits for work experience and challenge examinations, in addition to coursework.

My background is pretty varied: I have been practicing law for about 27 years. Prior to going to law school, I spent some 18 years in the maritime industry, in the fishing, towing, salvage and freight areas.. I had a master's license, now retired, and worked as an operations manager in each of these fields.

In addition to the foregoing, I have published, both fiction and non-fiction, and am an artist. My wife and I also operate a small farm in southern Arizona, where we harvest and mill mesquite beans into flour.

In terms of teaching, I have taken on interns over the years, have given some talks at high schools and have helped our five children through their university years.

If interested, I will be able to help you in the following subjects: law; legal writing; business operations; creative and nonfiction writing; political science; economics; history; geography; current events (geopolitical); government; and, anything maritime related.

My approach to teaching is predicated upon teaching students to think critically. That is, to learn to apply the sum of their knowledge and experience to new issues, learning materials and problems. Thus, in addition to reading and written work, where necessary, I also urge students to engage in discussions in order to flesh out their understanding of the subject matter and, perhaps, if they are so inclined, to ancillary materials.

I will work with you in accord with your abilities, though I will push you, if only a little, to expand on these.
