I am a lifelong media professional who has worked at major newspapers such as The Los Angeles Times and Palm Beach Post in Florida. I’ve trained more than a thousand journalists at several dozen newspapers around the nation in writing, editing and technology during a career that spans more than 30 years. As a tutor, I bring real-world, love-of-craft professional experience to my students.
Because I wanted to be in media by the time I was 14, I studied journalism and political science at Indiana University. Since then, I’ve worked as a copy editor and page designer at the East Valley Tribune and Palm Beach Post in Florida. Later, I became a copy editor and page designer for the Los Angeles Times’ National Edition.
I am currently the publisher of a newsletter that goes out to all of McDowell Mountain Ranch six times a year. I’m also highly-experienced in writing for social media, particularly Facebook and Twitter. I helped edit my wife’s two published novels, and I rewrote and edited a client’s well-received, self-published novella.
Working as a writer, editor, journalist or media expert requires a surprisingly high-level understanding of technology. Because I am as comfortable writing an article as I am designing pages, I’ve spent three decades training journalists how to use publishing software. There is really only one way to teach technology: Learn by doing. Lecture does not work, so instead I walk students through the steps of using software. I will ask students, for example, to build pages in InDesign or edit photos in Photoshop. My expertise includes, but is not limited to, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Publisher, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop and WordPress.
One of my strengths as a tutor is that I customize my courses to the individual needs of my students. As a tutor, I consider individuals goals, learning styles and personality types to determine the best course of action.
