I’m a senior at Grand Canyon University finishing my Bachelor of Science in Biology with a premed emphasis. I currently work as an undergraduate teaching assistant for General Biology and Anatomy, where I tutor students one on one and host weekly office hours. The students I work with are college students taking those courses for the first time. My own coursework covers general biology, anatomy, biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology, and advanced biochemistry with a lab, along with general chemistry, organic chemistry, and genetics.
Outside of class I have spent two years doing research in two faculty labs. My first project tested how two compounds affect pediatric brain tumor cells, and my current one studies cyanobacteria. I presented that work at the Boston Bacterial Meeting in June 2026. I’m also a Resident Assistant at GCU, so I talk with students every day and often help them make a plan when their classes start to pile up.
When I tutor, I start by having the student walk me through what they already know so I can find where the confusion begins. From there I break the topic into smaller steps and ask them to explain each one back in their own words. I use a lot of practice problems and flashcards instead of rereading notes, because that is how I study for my own science courses. I also like to recommend videos and mnemonics, along with the tips and tricks that helped me when I took these classes myself. Office hours have taught me that the same idea usually needs to be explained two or three different ways before it sticks, so I come ready with more than one. I’m happy to work with high school and college students in biology, chemistry, anatomy, and genetics.
