Hello, I'm Carolyn, but my 5 grandchildren call me Gigi. I'm a retired librarian with a Master's degree in Developmental Psychology. I've spent years helping those grandchildren and also children in the library with afterschool homework. I also spent 2 years as reading and writing tutor in K-6 elementary classrooms.

Each student is unique and I always save a few minutes in each session to connect with students to understand their individual differences and learning styles. I think my degree in psychology helps me understand these learning styles and my experience as a librarian makes me customer service oriented. I try to make lessons as fun and straightforward as possible and to provide positive feedback so the student will feel encouraged heading into the next lesson.

The family is such an important part of the student's life and I welcome insights and suggestions. I am easy to reach and respond within 3 hours. Please feel free to contact me with questions or to schedule a lesson.

Before receiving my Master's in Developmental Psychology from San Francisco State, I was an English major with an emphasis on composition and literature. Developmental psychology is also referred to as 'Lifespan' psychology and I spent much of the time learning about learning styles and differences in children from birth to early adulthood. Some students just need a little extra information and guidance before the 'get it', but others may need an individualistic teaching strategy to help them learn to approach the material in a way that helps them assimilate it in their own way. For instance, in school, I had to read word by word, which made me a slow reader. Many well-meaning teachers encouraged me to read whole phrases at a time and it was stressful. Finally, I learned that my brain was wired differently and I would have find a different method to make me a proficient reader.
